Starting from zero (ME by training), this book is very understandable & seems thorough. I like the voice, too

Rebeiz has done an excellent job in constructing a book that is valuable to both novices as well "experts" alike. You will not find a more comprehensive treatment of RF MEMS in one place anywhere else. This book covers both mechanical (static and dynamic)and electrical (EM) modeling of the all important MEMS switch. A survey of MEMS switch topologies and results will quickly get you up to speed as to who is doing what. The discussion on packaging and reliabilty are timely as these are arguably the two most intense areas of focus at this time facing the MEMS community. To round things off, phase shifters, varactors, filters, reconfigurable networks and antennas are also addressed as key RF MEMS technologies that have the potential for great engineering impact. Simply stated, if you have an interest in MEMS, you will benefit by reading this book.

The book, in a surprisingly simple way, gives in depth treatment of the fundamentals of modeling/design, fabrication technology, and reliability/power handling/noise analysis of MEM components and circuits. It has an exceptional tutorial value. At the same time its comprehensive and analytic coverage of the vast diversity of MEMs components (switches, varactors) and complex circuits makes it an excellent handbook for microwave professionals. I found this book on the top shelve, almost out of reach. I wondered why no one had checked out this jewel. It took me less than a chapter to figure it out. I held my ground until the professor explained the chemical building blocks of Nano. From there I grasped bits and pieces througout. Although it was complicated material, professor Sauder broke it down to a "nano" scale where even boneheads like me could understand.Professor Sauder said that I should now have a clear understanding of common concepts in Nanotechnology such asclassical mechanics, quantum theory, bucky balls, nano wires and silicon dioxide. I completed and returned the book happy that I was not one of her students cramming for next week's final exam.Overall, I was in awe of the small unknown world ( not known to me). I think everyone should know the basics of Nano. However, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to keep it simple

Congratulations are in order for Professor Sauder. I put this audio book to its ultimate test: I listened to the lectures while working out. It is my belief that a perfect lecture is one that tells a story, wrapping information in a narrative that is so compelling that the arc of understanding is revealed through a series of 'aha' moments. Those moments, when connected together, create a new framework that informs the listener's understanding of the universe. Professor Sauder does that well. And she does it in a manner that is disarming. Her manner is slow, deliberate and almost plodding at first, until the attentive listener realizes that there is not one spare syllable; everything is important, every word constructs the knowledge frame. I especially enjoy how she provides context for the historic events leading to nanosciences. The context of the Michelson-Morley experiment trying to detect the ether wind was enjoyable and the brief discussion of the impact of the industrial revolution on experimental method was important. All in all, I am happy I purchased the audio-book.

This is a great introduction to nanotechnology. The first 3-4 chapters are pretty basic, in that it goes over basic chemistry, Avogadros number, Coloumbs law, Metric vs English system. But after that it takes off incorporating history with explainations. It references a web site, I believe it is [...] Unfortunately I can't seem to get to that location.

Funny side note to begin this review. I apparently had no clue how to spell “loneliest” before I began typing this title and spell check kept sneaking an extra “e” in there! Now I know! The Loneliest Girl in the Universe was such an entertaining, different, and surprisingly good book! I have heard so much about it lately and when it kept popping up I finally broke down and decided I needed to see what the hype was all about. I didn’t really know what to expect, and I’ll be honest, I was a little hesitant at first. But then I got swept away in the mind of the MC Romy and all of the emotions she was going through being the sole occupant of a spaceship called The Infinity that is heading to another planet, Earth 2. I can’t begin to imagine how I would feel knowing that all communication with anyone on Earth had a two year delay in response, and being millions upon millions of miles away from all other life. My palms start sweating just thinking about it!Being a book about a single character, alone, far away in outer space, there really isn’t a large cast of characters that you meet. There’s Romy the MC, her therapist from NASA named Molly (assigned to her after she sent word that her parents had died in an awful accident), and J who’s on another spaceship sent to help Romy get to Earth 2.  Yep, you read that right, NASA decided that after Romy having spent years completely alone captaining a spaceship all by herself since the age of 11, they are finally sending her help!!! And in the form of a man named J on a spaceship called The Eternity.Romy was actually born on the ship after her parents accidentally got pregnant in the early years of their space travel to Earth 2. So she has never known Earth or anything really besides The Infinity and all its nooks and crannies. She was raised there by her parents until a horrible accident kills them while she's only 11 years old, and she is then forced to run the spaceship all on her own. I found myself really connecting with Romy, the thoughts that ran through her head and the way she handles all the problems or questions she comes across are pretty realistic to how I would feel if ever stuck in the same circumstance. She craves touch, and love, and even just a conversation from anyone other than the halfway conversations in the emails she receives from Molly on a daily basis. The emails from Molly really aren’t conversations at all because as Romy gets further and further away from Earth, the longer it takes for her messages to reach Earth. And at the time we enter her story, it currently takes one year to make it to Earth and then another year for the response to arrive in Romy’s inbox. Two years just to get a response to any question she might have. I would go insane.The format the book is written consists of the emails Romy receives, her fanfic of Loch & Ness (which was some of my favorite to read) and then the rest from Romy’s POV and all the thoughts running through her head. It hit me about halfway through that it was weird to read a book with little to no dialogue. I didn't really notice it until Romy herself mentions at one point that she didn’t know if her voice still even worked, that she hadn’t actually spoken out loud in years. Can you even imagine that? I constantly talk to myself, so I know that wouldn’t be the same in my case, but who actually knows what it would be like to be so alone for so long. Maybe I would just cease to talk out loud, what’s the point when you are literally the only person around to hear it?!This book had one crazy twist of an ending that brought me to almost tears at one point. It goes from being a mellow adventure of a 17 year old girl to something of a thriller. I was biting my nails hoping that she would survive. It was interesting the way that things were revealed over time instead of all at once. And you learn just exactly what happened on the ship that Romy doesn’t want to remember, or speak of. The whirlwind of an end had me consuming this book faster than my brain could keep up.  I read this in less than 24 hours and finished it feeling like I had just gone on a deep space adventure myself! This was a great read, and it will stick with me for a while to come. I’ll be putting this pretty book up on the favorites shelf along with all my other beauties!

I knew there would be some kind of twist, but I was NOT PREPARED for the extent of the twist. This was a fun, quick read that was genuinely unsettling. I shouldn’t write more, because the less you know ahead of time, the better. Definitely recommended.

Romy might be The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, but she has a lot to deal with out in space! Author Lauren James skillfully plants plot seeds throughout that kept me flipping through to see what happened, and even though I didn't mean to, I stayed up until 3:30 a.m. to see what happened!!!! Kudos to the author for creating a complex heroine and on great world building inside the space ship. Lots of plots twists and turns make for an ending I didn't see coming. Sci-fi/thriller/mystery for ages 12 to adult, and don't let the title fool you ... this is a book boys will enjoy too.

This started off really well. I loved all of the science talk/references and I just love all things space. But this is definitely a true young adult fiction with predictable plots and a predictable ending. Although I think this would be an amazing read for someone 11-16, it just wasn’t what I was hoping for.

Great read! Strong female protagonist with a definite taste of high math and physics. This is great for girls with an interest in science, but guys will love this thriller as well. Loved the plot twist and it is beautifully crafted. It is on my nomination list for my Top Ten Best Reads of the year.

Great original story line. Kept me guessing until the end. Loved it.

I’m so glad I received a recommendation to read this book. It is beautifully written, and edited. This story will keep you guessing and questioning almost to the end. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this book very much. I wish it had been longer though. The twists in the plot were great!

I found this book when feeling much despair in the treatment of my daughter who was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who has any IBD inflammatory bowel disease or IBS inflammatory bowel syndrome. We were offered surgery, (colon removal,) or heavy duty medications for our elementary age girl. She had been sick for several (7) months with bloody diarrhea. Some medications helped for a short period of time,(prednisone and mesalamine,) but it was only weeks before they didn't help. It finally occurred to me that we needed to look closer at fructose when she became quite ill after Halloween weekend. She had consumed soda pop, orange juice, and way too much candy. At first we stopped the fructose for about 5 days, we saw some improvement. But to fully implement this treatment we needed to stop milk as well, (she still got to eat cheeses and yogurts). We also reduced wheat products, only giving low fiber types like white bread in small doses and switching to gutten free whenever we could. Also we had already stopped the polyols, sugar alcohol artificial sweetners. Some artificial sweetners are okay and are quite helpful, such as aspartame. This was early in December 2009. I have since found out that this is called a FODMAP diet. Getting information on this diet appears somewhat limited, but it's out there and in this book. Nine days after full implementation of this method with our daughter and the blood in her stools stopped. Fifteen days after implementing this method and my daughter told me her bowel movements are back to the way they were 8 months ago prior to all of this starting, aka normal. She is not taking any medications. She is getting supplements of iron for her residual anemia and she takes a child size dose of basic, inexpensive probiotics. She also gets some vitamins. At first we weren't sure that this would be a lasting effect, maybe just a remission. But after looking long and hard for information on this I really truly believe that this is the answer I intended. We did not get information on this from our paid experts. We were told that diet has nothing to do with it. We were serving her medications with fruit juice several times a day!Our daughter is well, eating well, playing well, and her energy is returning to previous levels. Nothing could make us happier. She's not suffering, just having to pay attention to what she eats along with help from her parents. We have made sure she has her special treats for her special occasions at school and with friends.It is my understanding that fructose malabsorption is common and that is not abnormal for many to have sensitivities to consuming large loads or doses of sugar in whatever form it may come in. I will now always be a proponent of this concept. My grandmother died of ulcerative colitis in 1980. She was the best cook of all the chewy gooey sweets. I think of her often this time of year, the holidays...De Lamar Gibbons MD is my #1, all time hero. We owe him much graditute.

This book really worked for me. It's small, and to the point, but as simple as it is, I couldn't find the same information anywhere else!It's written by a doctor who had to deal with UC himself. The theory is still on the fringes, and you won't hear about sugar intollerances and sugar, fructose problems anywhere. However, they are a key factor in getting well in a number of illnesses.I would definitely recommend this book for a read and to try out if you are dealing with chronic illnesses from unexplained origins.. such as UC, CD etc.God bless the author.PS- I've noted some further info, not included in the book. To properly avoid ALL fructose foods, also add to the list (besides those in the book and all fruits); corn, corn syrup, beets, carrots, tomato, peas, eggplant, and sweet potato. I've also noticed it is helpful to just avoid any form of "glucose syrup".

This is the best, most complete overview of the mechanics of fructose intolerance and how it affects bowel health that I have found in years of reading, but there are disappointing gaps in the author's practical advice, and some downright bizarre statements about weight loss. If you have found that the conventional high-fiber diet for IBS is not helping (or even making your IBS worse), read this book. This may be the key to your problems. Unfortunately, after convincingly establishing that fructose intolerance is at the root of much bowel distress, the author gives only spotty practical advice about what to eat and what to avoid. For example, he repeatedly warns against eating "wheat fiber," but says nothing whatsoever about oat or rice fiber. Are they safer? Just as bad? He mentions "waffle syrup made of corn" several times as a source of fructose. Is he implying that pure maple syrup is safe? Maple syrup is very high in fructose I believe, but anyone reading this book might assume that as long as the syrup is not derived from corn it is harmless. And his weight loss advice is just strange. He rails against ketogenic diets as unhealthy and counterproductive to weight loss, then gives you his version to try! While the bulk of his argument is a revision of the unexamined conventional wisdom on "healthy" eating that he believes is all wrong for IBS sufferers, his weight loss advice is a hodge-podge of exactly the same kind of lazy conventional wisdom. I suspect this reflects the fact that serious bowel disorders (his area of expertise) are more likely to result in weight loss and emaciation than obesity, so his weight loss diet is kind of a careless afterthought.In the end, I recommend this book for its detailed discussion of fructose intolerance and its role in bowel disease, but if you decide to take the low-fructose approach to healing, look for another list of "eat this, avoid that" foods. As for weight loss, any low carb approach will be low fructose. This was purchased to help a family member understand her condition and how to deal with it. All these self help/information books fit into ones library for understanding, yet all are not always in agreement. One must decide for themselves what works best for them.

Suffering from IBS...this book is sure to help. My doctor said I would have to take meds the rest of my life, and I, by the grace of God found this book in the library. It has change my life and I have passed it on to many others. And it has changed their lives as well. It works!!

About the Author

Sandor Lehoczky participated in the Math Olympiad Summer Program in 1989, and in 1990 earned the sole perfect AIME score and led the national first place team on the AHSME (now AMC 12). Richard Rusczyk is the founder of the Art of Problem Solving website. He was a national MATHCOUNTS participant in 1985, a three-time participant in the Math Olympiad Summer Program, a perfect AIME scorer in 1989, and a USA Mathematical Olympiad winner. He is author or co-author of 6 Art of Problem Solving textbooks. Lehoczky and Rusczyk were co-founders of the Mandelbrot Competition and are board members of the Art of Problem Solving Foundation.

If your kid is (or if you are a kid) doing the MathCounts competition, you need to start here and know all this stuff. This is not the be all end all of your training, but you need to start here. Mastery of this book should put you ahead of 97-98% of the kids in local competitions. In short there are two types of kids in Math competitions: those that do AoPS and those that don't.

Some questions are written badly/are confusing, but generally challenging and engaging. Daughter and I had fun with these. And she did great on her math assessments.

I bought this solution manual along with the book for my middle-school kid who is studying math on the more advanced level than regular school stuff. The reason why it is a must have is that some of the problems in the problem book are hard and you might really don't know how to solve them. Overall, the solutions to the problems is clear. It would be super nice if authors can offer different solution paths to same problem so students can see how those different solutions are connected.

Good book for self learning. Stuff leaned at school is not sufficient for kids to master the knowledge.

I absolutely love this book and highly recommend everyone read it :)

The book presents a solid foundation of mathematics. It adds as an extra reference to normal class work. The book is thorough and rigorous. Definitely needs a solution manual

This whole series is excellent. I am a retired high school math teacher and currently teach math as an adjunct. The material in all these books is presented in a clear, mathematically rigorous way. I became acquainted with the series in my work with a mathematically gifted student. Working through this and other texts in the series has improved my own problem solving ability.
