Props to the author for getting her life back together and sharing her story. However if this book had had a warning on it, I would have probably chosen not to read it. Im aware that she wasnt always sure what was real, but secret torture chambers, the smell of fear, sweat, and urine coming from beneath a trapdoor because someone is being tortured down below, mention of snuff films, dismembered fingers and a lady who survived two months rolled up in a rug and then died of dehydration and starvation........those things are not necessarily part of a typical drug life. I have been reading many books on substance abuse because my best friend is in treatment. Shes not evil. Not like what is in this book. Everyones experience is different. This wasn’t a bad book, I just wish it had had some kind of warning or disclaimer about how disturbing it was. Thanks for telling your story.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Although there were numerous grammatical errors and historical inaccuracies (it was John Bulushi who died at the Chateau Marmont not Jim Bulushi. He is Johns brother and alive and well), I still was entranced by the author's tale of her journey through the life of a meth addict in Los Angeles. As a girl from England from a privileged background, she makes her way to the City of Angels to seek her fame and fortune after having graduating from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She was young and naive when she just meets the wrong people and gets introduced to the wonders wonders of acrystal meth high. She tells the story of the people she meets, lives with, gets high with, falls in love with. All the while she is getting deeper into the miasma of the tweaker lifestyle and her life is slowly falling apart.I enjoyed her self-deprecating humour as she traverses from one speed infused misadventure after another. Finally, after being arrested for the 2nd time she is deported back to England where she faces up to her family's dysfunction and her own culpability for her bad choices. This book finds her 10 years later and still struggling gamely to get a handle on her gift of life. No longer addicted to meth but still facing the temptations to self medicate and block out her feelings of insanity.I do recommend this book. Not only an interesting story but a timely one that may help some people to think twice before they take that first "toot".
It's difficult to understand how a girl with such potential in life could turn to a drug as powerful as meth. The way she lived to keep up her addiction is unbelievable! It gives dumpster diving a whole new meaning! The book is interesting but by the middle of it, it became a "poor pitiful me" version. She received financial help to enter and complete rehab from caring family members but blew it all away by going right back to the drug. Her desire to live in L.A. exceeded her need to go home to family and get a better life. If you want to read how a drug addict lives from day to day, this book puts you right there and it's not a pretty picture.
I loved the brutal honesty in which clea Myers uses to give the reader a glimpse into the world of crystal meth and the mind of those who use it. This book is entertaining and witty, even when it's shocking and disturbing. I feel this book is both a cautionary tale and a story of hope. The way the author recounts her time as a strung out addict and her path to recovery is refreshing.Whether you are a recovering addict, a lost soul currently in the world of drug use, or someone who has no knowledge of illegal drugs, this book is a must read.
I know former addicts and their journey was much like Clea's journey. While her story is harrowing, it chronicles "hitting bottom" and slowly making her way to a kind of peace. Everyone's story is different and yet surprisingly the same. Luckily Clea made it out alive and while her suffering was great at least she did so. Hopefully this book will inspire people in a difficult situation and remind others of how lucky they were to survive.
Alot of detail I think maybe could have been omitted but good book overall. I really like how the author didn't focus on "meth is bad" but gave supporting details of the type of people and situations this drug could bring about
I really love this book! If somebody wants a story so different than the normal boring murder or end of the earth, that is so mainstream, than this one is great, and true story, and she had my hart reaching out to her. She had problems with adiction but never sold herself, and goes to show anybody can have drug problems.
This poor girl had a very sad childhood and made the most of it later in life. Very interesting story on meth use and it's problems.
