Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a really great book. I've read it many times and was surprised to find this illustrated copy free for download on to my Kindle. I started reading it immediately. None of the film adaptations have done justice to this book though the Disney version came close. Those terrible Johnny Depp movies are really an insult as they turn this wonderfully weird book of nonsense and fantasy into some kind of action movie. It is actually a very unconventional book and any attempt to impose a conventional plot on it will just lead to a terrible mess. This and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There are both masterpieces of fantasy literature. Also included are Tinniel's wonderful drawings.
It was fun going back to the original fantastic story with the white rabbit, mad hatter, and red queen. The book was shorter than I had expected. Perhaps I'd somehow equated the countless idioms this work has entered into our culture with length. It was silly, and fun, and a great way to lose yourself for a couple of hours. Perhaps we're not so innocent anymore that a story like this could be written and accepted. I'm very glad we were so innocent once.
Until reading this, I hadn't realized how much opposition Alice truly had in Wonderland. There's a lot to relate to for anyone who has spend any amount of time in civilization. She meets these challenges head-on, an inspirational heroine for those of us facing the obstacles of day-by-day living.
Alice in Wonderland makes no sense. It is as jumbled, disheveled, and incongruent as a dream, for that is what it is. Lewis Carroll wrote this story to appeal to the imaginations of children, an audience that does not need to search for symbolism to enjoy a story. Between the ridiculous plays on well-known poems of the day, the constantly shifting physics and attitudes of the world of Wonderland, and the hint at the end of a happy future when childhood finally passes by, he produced a tale that can appeal to imaginations of all ages.Alice in Wonderland is not a drug trip, an overblown political satire, or a bitter remark upon society. While some of the author's views come through in the text, and the reader is welcome to interpret as he or she sees fit, there is nothing wrong with reading the story simply as a fantastic journey into a childlike, imaginative mind living through a dreamscape of wild possibilities and cultural ignorance. A story written to appeal to a child with a child's grasp of politics and high society need not be criticised; it need only be enjoyed.
Classic. Read it with kids while on vacation. Kept the interest so high, that they wanted to dress up as characters from the book for Halloween. It is a must read for kids. My kids were really surprised Disney version is not the same as the book. Now they want to re-read all the classic tales. That’s always a plus.
The version I received had no illustrations at all (despite many of the reviews here commenting on the illustrations in their copies), and was in tiny print. This version is not suitable for a child, but maybe for a college student doing a thesis on the book.
I enjoyed this story and its been many years since I last read it. Its rather short & the included artwork brought even more life to the book. I enjoyed the ridiculousness and the riddles the characters exposed. Its all a really bizarre dream of Alice's but what an original dream it is! Everyone needs a "-wonderland" every now and then!
I didn't realize upon purchasing this book that it was an "adapted" version, meaning it's made easy to read, and is for children primarily. I wanted the full novel by Lewis Carroll, not some shortened, easy version. Maybe it says this in the description. Maybe I should've read deeper? Oh well! Gave it to GoodWill
