I love Carolyne Aarsen as an author and this book was a wonderful story of love and forgiveness and the healing that brings.Sheryl Kyle had left home at 18 and hadn't been back for 8 years. Mark Andrews had traveled to Edmonton to find her. She was the step-sister of his brother-in-law Nate Krickson. Nate's father, Ed, Sheryl's stepfather was dying and wanted to see Sheryl one more time before he died. He had been a harsh stepfather and he wanted her forgiveness.Sheryl was broken and didn't open herself up for heartbreak because she had experienced too much loss and heartbreak in her life. She had lost her father at a young age and when her mother remarried six months later, she hadn't grieved her father enough and became a rebellious teenager. Then when she married right out of high school she found her husband was abusive and mean and she was constantly trying to protect herself from more physical and emotional pain.Mark was attracted to Sheryl and wanted to protect her help to heal her soul. But, try as he might, Sheryl just didn't want to experience more pain and she shied away. As time went on, Mark was convinced that he had lost her but kept praying for her. Would she ever be able to finally find the forgiveness and love she had always wanted or would she lose out because she wasn't willing to show her vulnerability and show her weakness so she could be healed and made strong?I am looking forward to reading more books by this author. In fact, I immediately began reading another book by this author.
This book opened up and caught my attention from the beginning. I had to keep reading to find out what would happen. I liked how real the characters were. Mark's constancy and Sheryl's struggles made the book more enjoyable. I highly recommend this book to those looking for a great romance and realness.
Sheryl and Mark's story will take you on a ride through the past, emotional and physical pain, knowing a loving God, then having doubts about God, then back to knowing and loving God again. Sheryl's story is the story of many--step daughter left with a step-father and step-brother who didn't know how to deal with a girl. Sheryl chose to act out and run off with the town's bad boy--which was a mistake she quickly learned to regret. Sheryl returns to the ranch, as her step-father is near death and asked to see her. Forgiveness prevails, and Sheryl has a lot of thinking to do about her life and choices she made. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book, and actually had purchased it previously--just never got to it from my large TBR 'pile.'
It's not easy to forgive, let alone forget. But that is just what Sheryl has to do. Her life was full of cruelty. She suffered abuse of many kinds ... physical, emotional and spiritual. Her loving dad died when she was only 10. He had taught her that God was gentle, loving and kind. But when her mother remarries only six months later, Sheryl is introduced to a new family, a family that's rigid, demanding and harsh. She's a young, free spirited girl who can't please her stepfather or stepbrother no matter how hard she tries. And she tried for years. She finally gives up, runs away with the town's bad-boy where life goes from bad to worse. One day a stranger shows up at her workplace telling her she needs to go home. Home? Where is home? Her stepfather is dying and wants to see her, wants to tell her how sorry he is. But words are just not strong enough to break the hardened shell that Sheryl has built around herself over the years of abuse she's suffered. Here enters Mark, the stranger who brought her home for her stepfather to say his goodbyes. Mark is a hardworking rancher who owns half of her stepdad's farm. He gave up his successful real estate career in the big city to live a simpler, albeit harder, life of a farmer.Through Mark's influence, Sheryl starts to soften, but it's a slooooow process. Change doesn't happen over night, let alone dealing with the pains from years of abuse and destruction. Her heart was broken as well as her body. This makes her very leery of men. Trust isn't given easily, especially when all you've know is 'bad' from the men who were suppose to care for you, love you and protect you. However, Mark is different. He practices what he preaches, he walks the walk. Baby step by baby step, Mark helps Sheryl to see there is hope and the God she gave up on, didn't give up on her.Yes, this book is good. So glad to see an author who doesn't have to yield to smut to fill the pages of an emotionally charged storyline. The drama, the fear, the lies lived are all exposed page by page. I did think the book ended a little too soon. I still wanted to know what happened to her with Jason. Was she in the car with him at the time of the accident? It's alluded to but not revealed. Did Jason ever cause Sheryl to miscarry? It was clear she wanted children. She was so loving toward her newly discovered nieces and nephew that I kept wondering about if she ever was pregnant during her eight years with Jason.I also wanted to see Nate have to deal with his own role in Sheryl's brokeness. Nate got off way to easy. Yes, he read her diaries and felt guilt but we didn't get to 'see' or 'feel' his guilt. I also would have liked to 'been there' when Mark was reading her diaries. We are told they were eye opening for both Nate and Mark. It would have been nice to experience some of the painful revelations they discovered while reading those journals. And, did Ed ever find out about that letter????? Did Nate own up to his dad what he had done and what he had caused?Still a lot of questions I'd like to see answered. Maybe the author will do a spinoff answering some of these questions???? This book was done in Sheryl's POV (point of view). Maybe some bonus chapters or a spinoff showing Jason, Nate, Mark, Ed and even Elise's POV.
I really enjoyed this story. While I'm not a huge fan of cowboy stories, the cowboys of Sweet Creek may change my mind. This is a nice love story, but personally, I look for more than that when I read. What I look for most is whether or not a particular book has underlying themes that can make me think & remind me of important life lessons. This one does. It reminds me of the dangers of judging other people without knowing where they are coming from - especially judging based on hear-say. It challenges me to be open to forgiveness in even difficult relationships. It also reminds me that usually if I feel estranged from God, it's time to look at choices I may have made that led me away from Him. And finally, it reminds me that love, especially God's love, can conquer much of the ugliness in life when we open ourselves to its influence.
I absolutely loved reading Homecoming by Carolyne Aarsen. I loved every minute of reading this book. It was a sweet and romantic book that kept me completely captivated til the very end. The characters were wonderfully wriiten with an amazing love connection between them. This is an absolute definite must read that you wont want to miss out on.
