This is a beautiful, thoughtful, well written, and well researched book about Heaven as described in Scriptures. The author, Joni Eareckson Tada, is a remarkable person. She is a quadriplegic in a wheelchair, has written a number of excellent books, is a national speaker, and has a ministry to disabled individuals. She pictures heaven in vivid, insightful and glorious images. The book is divided into three parts.1. What Will Heaven by Like?2. Will Heaven be Home?3. The Journey Home.Throughout the book Joni gives illustrations from her own experiences and from theexperiences of others, especially those with major handicaps. Chapter 5 Why Don’t We Fit on Earth? resonates with my own experiences. Our culture’s materialism, tasteless entertainment and corrupt morality cause me to feel this world is not my home. Joniwrites “I’m a little like a refugee who is longing for a better country called heaven.” Pg. 98Throughout the book Joni gives inspiring and thoughtful insights. For example “We are not only to set our hearts on things above where Christ is seated, but set our minds onthings above as well. That’s hard.” Pg. 127 She explains in detail why that’s hard and promises we will have “the mind of Christ when we lay hold of Him and His ideas.” Pg.129 No book review can do justice to this book! This is not an easy read. It must be read slowly and thoughtfully. It will challenge many Christians, especially Chapter 9 Getting Ready for Heaven and the scriptures about suffering. This book can be very helpful to anyone who is severely handicapped or who takes care of a handicapped person and wants to understand God’s perfect plan for their life.It will give all readers a glorious view of our future home and help us focus on Him!

I am a Hospice patient who is slowly dying. I wanted to read this book to bolster my faith on Heaven is my Home. It was well written and I enjoyed it very much. I also look forward to telling Joni that when we both get home.

Heaven is a book that is simply a blessing to all who read it. Joni writes in such away that I was touched on every page, Take God out a box and allow him to bless, comfort, encourage, and bless you is the main point I took from the book. Knowing that you are only passing through this world but not of it. gives comfort in a time of pain. Everyone should read this book.

When God takes something away He replaces it with something better. Joni wrote this after having lived over 50 years as a quadriplegic resulting from an accident at 17 years old. I used to feel sorry for her. Now after reading this book, I realize she could feel sorry for me. For the past 50 years, God has perfected His strength in her weakness, and she's experienced wisdom and joy that daily pressures Rob me of regularly. Who better to write about Heaven, than someone who's spent the last 50 years living it? If Joni has taught me anything, it's not to hesitate to enter into His presence. Let's help bring His heaven to earth. We only have so many more sunsets before He returns, let's do our best to show others the way home.

This book offers Joni's insights which come from being a quadriplegic for nearly 30 yrs. (at the time of writing). This book is an oasis of truth, clarity, theologically sound and deep, real, qualified, and balanced perspectives in a time of marketed and sensationalized near death experience stories that never agree nor can be validated. Conversely, Joni offers inspiring, convicting, and comforting perspectives that have and continue to be validated via Scripture, experience, and reason. It's time to refocus on the revelation of the substantial hope of heaven's reality, purpose, promises, and Person. Joni is one of my heroes. *Joni's friend Hank Hanegraaff (who also considers her a hero) has written a wonderful book on this subject too. It is "Afterlife." I encourage you to scan the Table of Contents and endorsements (if available) in both of these books to aid you in your potential purchase decision.

This is a deeply profound sharing of faith by a wheelchair confined woman, who is totally dependent on others for her physical needs. It is an uplifting witness of her deep trust in God and the amazing determination to reflect God’s Glory through her life.

Wonderful book! Joni Erickson Tada fulfills her God inspired mission to draw our hearts home to heaven while our feet are firmly planted on earth. The love she has for God reverberates in my spirit as I join her in her stride for our promised land.

I ordered this mistakenly thinking it was the base book "Heaven". Instead it is a devotional with excerpts from "Heaven". There are 10 Parts to the devotional which I guess gather the excerpts topicaly. Within each part are 2 page devotions that each start with a bible verse and often end with a short prayer. There are only a few line drawings, and none of Joni's fabled color paintings within. However, it is sufficient for my purpose.Part 1 What is so great about heaven?Part 2 Who are we in heaven?Part 3 What will we do in heaven?Part 4 Where is heaven and what is it like?Part 5 Why don't we fit on earth?Part 6 Heaven has our heart's desirePart 7 Heaven: the home of lovePart 8 At home with our kingPart 9 Getting ready for heavenPart 10 Homeward bound

Very well done for a self-published book. I have not yet worked on any of the projects but this seems to be a very good introduction to walking foot quilting by a master free motion teacher. It augments rather than duplicates the two classes on Craftsy by Jacque Gerig (I have not read her book yet.)Day's book includes projects that she will use for on-line classes starting next year but they look they could be produced with her directions alone. Of course the classes will encourage, enlighten, and entertain. Photographs are good.

Content exceeds expectationsBook exceeds my expectations. Author gives detailed directions. She has carefully included tips to avoid things that could go wrong. As a beginner at machine quilting with a walking foot, I am confident that I can proceed.

I started using this book the next day. Excellent directions, beautiful quilt designs and lots of hints make this a great addition to my quilting library. We likely be my go to book for machine quilting.

This book is well written in an easy to understand format, the instructions very clear. The photos show the details being discussed in the narrative. I am confident the info in this book will make me a better quilter! In addition to all this, the author has classes from this book on the internet! Very happy with this purchase.

If you can only get one book this year, this is the one to get. As with all things Leah does it is very detailed. The directions are through and the pictures are terrific. She does not just show you pretty pictures of quilts she made and leave you feeling like you could never do as well as her. She shows you each step how to create the quilts.Gives you tips to over come problems Plus she will have videos starting in January to go with the book. You will not regret purchasing this book.

Love anything be Leah Day! I learn so my h from here. This book is awesome is you want to learn "free motion" quilting with your walking foot.

This is a comprehensive guide to quilting with the sewing machine's walking foot. I learned a lot and am inspired to use it on my latest quilt.

I love everything Leah Day puts out - so easy to understand.

We Are Okay, by Nina LaCour

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Her first semester of college behind her, Marin stays alone in the dorms over break, even with the threat of a snowstorm looming, rather than return to San Francisco, where bad memories lurk. Her best friend Mabel comes to stay with her, and over the next few days, Marin contemplates the events of last spring and summer and deals with her complicated relationship with Mabel. Slowly, readers learn more about Marin's life: the surfer mother who drowned when Marin was young, the father she never knew, the loving grandfather who raised her but whose concealed secrets kept a wall between them, and the painful events that sent Marin fleeing San Francisco. LaCour's use of settings is masterly: frigid and desolate upstate New York reflects Marin's alienation, while vibrant San Francisco evokes moments of joy. Though there's little action, with most of the writing devoted to Marin's memories, thoughts, and musings, the author's nuanced and sensitive depiction of the protagonist's complex and turbulent inner life makes for a rich narrative. Marin is a beautifully crafted character, and her voice is spot-on, conveying isolation, grief, and, eventually, hope. With hauntingly spare prose, the emphasis on the past, and references to gothic tales such as The Turning of the Screw and Jane Eyre, this is realistic fiction edged with the melancholy tinge of a ghost story. VERDICT A quietly moving, potent novel that will appeal to teens, especially fans of Laurie Halse Anderson and Sara Zarr.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

What is love? What does it mean to love? And to be loved? What is family? What does no longer having family mean? What if you never had the family you thought and never realized until it was too late?College freshman Marin is alone. Physically. Emotionally. Metaphorically. Her mom died when she was a toddler. Raised by her recently departed, loving but distant grandfather, Marin truly is without family. She's alone in the dorms over the winter holidays, awaiting a visit from Mabel, the best friend she's been ignoring since she fled San Francisco after her grandfather's death.Nina LaCour has written such an achingly haunting story of loneliness and grief. Marin is hurting so much, she can barely speak. She's ignored Mabel's calls, texts, emails and letters for months. Now, face to face, Marin still can't express her pain. We would all be so lucky to have a friend like Mabel, understanding, patient and loving.WE ARE OKAY is more a character study through grief and enlightenment than a plot driven story. I don't think everyone will love LaCour's latest masterpiece as much as me, depending on mood and the type of stories that move them. The further into the story I read, the more hooked I was and the more I worried about a certain negative outcome. I rooted for a specific positive ending, although figured it would be unlikely based on the direction of the narrative. I never could have predicted the resolution.WE ARE OKAY is a quiet story dripping with emotion. It's the type of book I know I will read and reread for deeper depth and understanding each time. I believe this may be one of those stories I reread every year or so, for the beauty of the words, story and message. If WE ARE OKAY sounds like your type of book, you will love it. Even if not now, there may be a time in your life where it speaks to you.

First, 2 things: This cover is absolutely stunning. & second, this is my first Nina LaCour novel and I have to say that I was blown away by this short, powerful novel. This story starts with Marin who, we know, is suffering from some kind of grief and afraid of being alone. But it's Christmas break at her university and since she has nowhere else to be she is staying at the dorms all by herself for a month or so. She half wants to/is half afraid of snuggling up in her bed and never getting up again. But her old friend Mabel is coming to visit for 3 days so she can't do that just yet.Mabel is a reminder of Marin's past. Marin hasn't returned any of Mabel's messages for months but now Mabel will be in the same room with her and she will have to deal with that past and with her lingering feelings for Mabel, whatever those may be.This is a short novel and not a lot happens because this is not a plot-driven book. But it packs a powerful punch emotionally. It's about grief, it's about dealing with finding out someone is not completely who thought you were, it's about dealing with loneliness, and love. And this book spoke to me. Gripped me. Such beautiful prose and such strong emotion.I will say that the reason I would not give this a full 5 stars is because there were some bits that struck as being somewhat unrealistic. Not that they could never happen, just that they probably don't often happen. But maybe I'm jaded. Who knows?

I gave this book 4.5 Stars but rounded up to 5 as it was closer to 5 than 4.This book seriously hit me with the feelings. It feels like it has been a LONG time since anything that I have read brought me tears. I liked the idea of this book and it was so beautifully crafted that it ended up being much more than I expected. I really FELT the Emerson quote that the author chose to use and feel like it is an important message for everyone (I am including the full quote here even though it was shortened a bit for the book):“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” -Ralph Waldo EmersonI was surprised by the turn of events, though I did see a few small details coming. The ending was so lovely, it has left me feeling uplifted and satisfied with the future for these characters when I am typically left wanting so much more.

I liked this book, but I had a hard time staying interested. I actually read two books in between. I found the main character, Marin, almost forgettable, whiny, and kind of annoying. I felt bad for her friend Mabel, who kept trying so hard to get through to Marin. The words and imagery were beautiful, which is what I come to expect from Nina LaCour, but something left me feeling unsatisfied at the end of the book.I love Nina's other books and it saddened me that this one wasn't my cup of tea.

I enjoyed this. An easy read, page by page, but lots and lots of material, lots and lots about how the various characters actually lived. How they dressed, what they ate, where they lived, where they went on vacation. You can take a long time reading this. I have one complaint which is that I tired quickly of how Sylvia continually acceded to Joyce's constant demands for money, much of which he spent on a lavish lifestyle, as well as the almost daily demands from her for what amounted to secretarial support. Well, if that's the way it was that's the way it was, one might say. But there's also the continual insistence that she was a strong, independent woman. If so, why did she knuckle under to this parasite? I don't know. At any rate, though this detracted from my enjoyment of the book I still think it gets five stars for its exquisite recitation of so much else. It is, after all, the story of a very interesting period and if you don't like the central character you (that is I) need to get over it.

Sylvia Beach knew everyone who was anyone in the Paris in which she lived. She was the publisher of James Joyce's "Ulysses", and was his financial savior at the expense of her own economic needs. ON PBS, I saw a documentary about her, and immediately bought this book. It does not disappoint. The author writes with an ability to explain the atmosphere of the period, the mores extant, and the incredible number of famous people who inhabited this world.Among the famous characters in her world (and all realistically portrayed) were Hemingway and his women, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, T. S. Eliot, etc. Stephen Spender and William Butler Yeats gave readings in her book store. Basically everyone who was anyone during that time knew Sylvia. One of the unintended consequences of my reading this book was that I found James Joyce to be a real jerk. Basically, he was not a nice man; he was an awful combination of arrogance and humility, and he seemed to feel he was under appreciated by everyone, even his greatest acolyte, Sylvia Beach. This is definitely a must read for anyone who is interested in this period - it's one of the best I've read. Sylvia Beach lived a life that many women of that period could only dream of, and the author has captured her life and her milieu beautifully. The book is also excellently indexed, and has informative notes. My only (selfish) complaint is that I wish there were more photographs (16 pages weren't enough for me).I highly recommend this biography.

I have become such a fan of Sylvia Beach and this book was the icing on my cake. I made me decide to return to Paris and wander her streets. I understand that someone has purchased Shakespeare and Company and created a bit of a tribute to Sylvia - I absolutely want to see it! If you want to see the other side of James Joyce, this is also an excellent resource.

Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation This is an ambitious and serious work, accessible in style, and packed with information in over four hundred pages. It has three main themes, clearly defined in the introduction. The first is the love between Adrienne Monnier and Sylvia. The details of this, so we are told, 'were and are still little known' in 1983 when this book was first published. The second is her admiration for, and championship of, James Joyce. The third is her bookshop, Shakespeare and Company, which was a key feature of the literary scene in Paris between the two World Wars. By far the most detail is provided on her professional relationship with Joyce. Her efforts to get Ulysses published and smuggled into America, her financial and personal efforts to support the author, and the amount of time and energy she invested, are the key theme of the book. Naturally Sylvia knew all the other familiar literary figures of the time. Hemingway and Pound are frequently mentioned, as is Gertrude Stein. As intimated in the introduction there is less to be said about more personal relationships. In a way this seems rather a pity. The anecdotal style and recurring references to various incidents along the way give the writing a rather disjointed feel. Inevitably there is also a certain sense of déja vu particularly for anyone familiar with biographies of Hemingway for example. The strength and the weakness of the book is the amount of text devoted to James Joyce. Joyce attracts great, but not universal, enthusiasm. The man himself seems to have had more arrogance than charm. Depending on the side of this divide which the reader favours this book will firmly hold the attention or will, in places, rather pall.

The story of the early Paris Bohemian bookstore, Shakespeare and Company and the first of the mostly young and shoestring lite writer habitué.

Loved reading about this heroically independent woman. She had many friends, close and casual, but always maintained her independence right up to the very last page, which describes her death. I'm so glad I kept reading until then. You won't want to focus on all the details that are included, but there are a lot of fun stories about all the famous people she knew too.

Interesting tale of life in Paris for expatriates

Great book, great story, great price.
