About the Author
Douglas A. Skoog was a professor of chemistry at Stanford University and the lead author of several best-selling texts during his career. He earned a B.S. in chemistry from Oregon State University and his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Illinois. Dr. Skoog was the 1999 recipient of the American Chemical Society award in analytical chemistry, sponsored by the Fisher Scientific Company. That same year, he was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1993, he received the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award for Excellence in Teaching.

I'm renting this book and the hardcover has completely detached from the binding. I've never had a book fall apart like this.
It's the right book, but its very used. The binding of the book has been disconnected since I got it and that makes it impossible to take anywhere. Its a pain to have to baby it which may lead to rerenting or just caving to purchase a new one.I'm sure most of them that go out are in usable condition, but that's a stretch with the book I received.
Electronic text books what a wonderful idea,
(copy/paste of my 6th edition review). I found this book to be very solid when I used the 3rd edition.For those of you who don't like Skoog you have 5 major competitors:1. "Instrumental Methods of Analysis", 7th edition, by Willard, Merritt, Dean, Settle; (ISBN 0534081428) which is excellent and a true classic. It's OOP now. The 8th edition was scheduled to be released in 2016 but there's been a big unexplained delay.2. "Chemical Analysis: Modern Instrumentation Methods and Techniques", 2nd edition, by Rouessac & Rouessac. Very nice alternative textbook to Skoog with a simpler approach overall.3. "Undergraduate Instrumental Analysis" 7th Edition by Robinson, Skelly-Frame and Frame. It`s half-decent but some chapters haven`t been updated in years. Also spends too many pages on NMR, IR and Raman. Odd topic emphasis.4. "Chemical Instrumentation: A Systematic Approach" by Strobel and Heineman. This reference book is very hardware oriented and can`t be considered true general instrumental analysis text. Very good, though.5. "Instrumental Analysis" by Granger, Yochum, Granger and Sienerth.I'd also recommend that you buy "Statistics and Chemometrics for Analytical Chemistry" by James N. Miller & Jane C. Miller. It does a much better job than the cursory chapters found in regular analytical texts. Get the 4th or 5th edition. For a paperback, this book is ridiculously expensive if you buy new. Try to find a used copy.While the book by Miller & Miller is good, it's no substitute for a 1 or 2 semester course in stats. A good book for this material might be Statistics for Research, Third Edition by Shirley Dowdy, Stanley Wearden, Daniel Chilko (ISBN 047126735X)Check out my chemistry listmanias and book reviews on various undergraduate chemistry books.
An absurdly overpriced book intended to gouge college students. Mind you, I looked throughout the book for the gold pages or diamond studded spine of the book. Did I find silver and gold? NOTHING! I didn't lick my fingers, but my visual acuity should be enough to identify the most expensive element of this book. Maybe it was those rare and hard to find conversions inside the book shooting up price? I hate to tell the publisher - I can find those with google. sorry bing. IT COULD BE THE blue color in the book. Maybe they were printing with indigo, and there was a run?! Instead of "Where's Waldo" I am playing "Where's the cost?" Oh yes, that is right. The publisher has to offset the cost of printing for such a low number of books printed. How silly of me to forget that someone needs a salary they don't deserve.As for the contents, I must admit that the sticker shock and holding the book in my hand overwhelms me. Just know that in all likelihood, this book will have very little to no use. I just hope so few are sold that this becomes a collector's item, therefore I can sell this for a HUGE profit. If beanie babies could be valuable at one time, so can this textbook. PEOPLE!!! This book will become very, very rare once the semester ends!! Consider contacting me to get this soon to be very valuable book at a reasonable collector's price.
