Why China Will Never Rule the World:Travels in the Two Chinas, by Troy Parfitt

Review

Parfitt, who has taught English in Taiwan for over a decade, uses his experience there to start several months of travel through the People's Republic of China in order to challenge the assumptions that China will determine the course of the global economy in the next century. The result is mostly travelogue told from an outsider's perspective, contextualized with overviews of major events in Chinese history. Parfitt argues that China will not rule the world, because as a nation it is more interested in the appearance of success than actual substance. He suggests that culturally, China has little to offer. More importantly, the majority of goods currently being created in China come from non-Chinese companies, again proving a lack of innovation. Parfitt makes a compelling case from the microcosmic level for why it will be difficult for China to become the primary hegemonic force of the 21st century. However, his book lacks the pre-cise facts and figures that he decries in other books promoting Chinese dominance. Parfitt is a persuasive writer and readers will leave his tale scratching their heads and perhaps deciding that they do not want to visit China at all. --Publisher's Weekly, June 2011

Excellent book packed with erudite insights and personal anecdotes from travel experience in both mainland and Taiwan. Compared to Age of Ambitions which is also an excellent non-fiction book on modern China (highly recommended as well), I think this book takes more issues deeply rooted in Chinese culture, history, and social values, e.g. Confucianism, Lao-ism, Legalism, beyond just politics. A stern indictment of decay in Chinese culture that I wish every Chinese could read and help correct to make the country truly great. But I am sure Mr. Parfitt's advice will be ignored and dismissed by majority Chinese. It's unfortunate.

I bought this book after seeing various articles about it when it was published. This is a grumpy but well-written travelogue about the author's experiences in China and Taiwan. He doesn't find much that he enjoys in China, but he explains his reasons why and backs up his points with references from history and society. The book is sometimes funny and just manages to stay within the territory of not going too far. It gets a little bit too long in some parts but it just about stayed ok.In particular I enjoyed the chapters where the author describes his experiences on Chinese public transport. I had the same experiences when travelling in China too!

I was drawn into this book by its auspicious title - if you're interested in China and it's development, it's as if you cannot miss this book. Despite the dramatic title, this turned out to be a well-informed book on China's development. Troy Parfitt, the author, demonstrates that he knows what is really going on in China. I've been living and doing business in mainland China (specifically Chengdu, the Sichuan capital) for over 7 years and with China's recent rise to prominence there have been a flurry of books published by Western "experts" who have no on the ground knowledge of China at all. Thankfully, this is not one of those books.I find that anyone from a Western country who spends many years in China will grow bitter and resentful about some of China's eccentricities. In this book, Troy Parfitt makes an argument and supports it with evidence collected interacting with Chinese people in China over many years. It's fair game to base a book around China's weaknesses, if you ask me. This is essentially one of those books. While reading this book, I silently nodded my head in agreement with the author's observations countless times. He really captures many of the small details of China that are rarely put into print. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what the real China is like - the good and the bad.

Excellent Product and Service

I just read the Kindle edition and was delighted throughout. The book won't disappoint for sheer reading entertainment or for educational value as the author incorporates a very unique writing style (at least for me) of combining travelogue and personal anecdotes that intelligently intersperse with very interesting historical backdrops and cultural observations and analysis. I can also say the experiences of the author and his reactions to them strongly resonated, because I also spent 10 years in mainland China doing business and teaching English in the cities of Shanghai, Kunming and Shenzhen. For me, his boat trip down the Yangtse was hilarious in a way of making me both laugh and cry, and I felt I was there sharing in the seemingly mindless, maddening mayhem of the Chinese version of reality ("a mental ward without a roof"--as one fellow English teacher in Shanghai described it). I also think the assertion stated by the title was fairly and accurately defended. China has never led the world, it has never been the most advanced nation in the world, and China really has nothing of value to teach or contribute to humanity now. While I was in China, many times the sense came over me that even though the country was so enormous and ancient, it actually was very small and immature--a stunted society. The danger now is that a childish and megalomanic Chinese leadership puffed-up from China's recent (mostly foreign driven) meteoric economic rise, will actually believe its own hyper-nationalistic propaganda and attempt to assert its bellicose claims of superiority through militaristic means.I wanted to add that there is one aspect of Chinese culture I wish had been given some space--eating--because if there is one thing that typifies the China experience it is that. Although Chinese food can be really delicious and healthy, it got to the point with me that I could not tolerate sharing a meal because of the constant gutteral background cacophony of slurping, smacking, gurgling, snorting, sucking and sometimes clearing of phlegm and spitting (as loud as possible, please) that always accompanies it, along with everyone slobbering on their chopsticks before reinserting them into the communal pot for another morsel. It almost seemed that a better system of insuring the spread of communicable pathogens could not be devised.

A true beautiful insight into the life of the Blessed Mother. As the Blessed Mother tells her story, She has a lot to say to the saint on how one should live in the sight of God. The most important of all is the Blessed Mother, Her life, and Her true sorrows, are told. Our Lady of Sorrows! And the beautiful relation throughout Her life with God, starting at the time within her mother womb. Just like 'John the Baptist', leaped for joy at the sound of the Blessed Mother voice in his mother womb. She tells Her story, along with Satan, who is on watch!I'm so pleased to have it on my Kindle. I would never have been able to paid for the complete edition in book form. The price would be too much for me to pay for. Thank You Amazon for the low cost.Because this is a large volume, don't let that be a problem. Using E-Books, this is format, how it is done. I have turned to the different parts of the book, reading about Her birth, then jumping to read about the lost of Jesus. Going to one part to another, is no problem. I would not wait to read certain parts of her life. Then I when back to read it again, taking my time. Those who say that it is a problem, must live in the fast lane!Anyone who wishes to read about the Blessed Mother will be filled with wonder! And grace. You will see why She is our Mother, and the Mother of the Church! She also speaks about the apostles.

This book tells you the details of what the Blessed Virgin went thru from Conception to Her being brought to Heaven Body and Soul. It makes you think of yourself, compare yourself and also helps you get closer to Her to get closer to Her Son. You will be made humbled and there are times you will be ashamed of your past but, this book lets you know that if you are serious about your faith and trust in God, he does forgive. The only bad point of this book is that Kindle has many repeat pages.I guarantee you will get closer to Mary for Jesus with this book.

I'm reading this at a slow and contemplative pace. I look forward to picking it up and reading it. I have always loved and respected the Blessed Mother of God, but to see the immeasurable care and consideration He gave her through all time has only increased my love and respect for her and her deep desire for us to humbly love and serve God first.I can never aspire to her greatness in the eyes of God, but I most certainly feel that imitation of her holiness and obedience is what He Himself desires.I love and appreciate the humility and obedience of the Venerable Mary of Agreda. She too has set a great example for all to follow.

A little difficult for the first hundred pages. But once you get to the sections dictated by the Blessed Mother, it is hard to put it down. I would recommend reading every word since it helps in the understanding and incorporation of the material. I read it and then start over. I am on reading number seven right now. It has been a guide in how to establish my relationship with God. I think I will continue to read it till I make my final transition. I am sure if I can follow its guidance I will end up with the author so I can have all my final questions answered. It has been such a help for me in getting on the narrow road. Aloha. God Bless

I love the book but it was written in the 1700's and I find it rather hard to understand. I'm reading this a little each day, it tells about Jesus and Mary's time here on earth that is not in the Bible. It also gives direction on how to live in order to please God. I am very glad that I decided to read this wonderful book.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO EVERY HUMAN BEING TO READ. I FIRMLY BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING IN SCHOOLS TOO. MAYBE THIS WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE IF EVERYONE WOULD UNDERSTAND WHERE THEY CAME FROM AND WHERE THEY SHOULD HOPE TO RETURN TO "HEAVEN" !!!

I never knew this book existed until a spiritual friend of my told me about it and recommended I read it. WOW, does not even come close to what's is revealed in this book about our Lady and Mother. Again, it is a must read if you have a devotion to the Blessed Mother. Be prepared to be enlightened.

Well for Catholics or even Church of England high church, this is most appropriate for good meditation. It is almost never found at this price and my Kindle allows me to have it available always

Ugh... where to begin. I was so deeply disappointed (and disturbed, of course) by this book that I don't even know how to put it into words. But I guess I'll try anyway. First of all, let's be clear, this is not a scholarly review of what the Bible has to say about hell, eternity, damnation, etc. No, let's call it for what it is. It's just a quick rebuttal of Rob Bell's "Love Wins" and it reads as if it was so quickly thrown together that you can almost read the authors' motives: "Quick, we have to get this book out that shows why Rob is clearly wrong, and we have to do it before the public loses its interest in the topic." Francis Chan suggests (here and elsewhere) that we need to just take the Bible for what it actually says. God says it, we believe it. But a proper "literal" translation of the New Testament requires the context of first-century Judaism and Jewish political, social, and religious life under the oppression of the Roman Empire, as well as the language in which the original letters were written. Chan merely glances over these vital aspects. A few references to some Greek words here (only meant to disprove Bell's interpretation with regards to "a time of pruning"), a few references to some Jewish texts here (to claim the assumption that all first-century Jews believed that hell was a place of eternal punishment and suffering), and voila... we have proof! This is what God said and this is certainly what he meant! Eternal punishment! Now, I haven't read Bell's book yet (but it's certainly on my to-do list) but I would strongly suggest that if you read this book, you should not only read "Love Wins" as well, but you shouldn't just stop there. Bell is not an adequate representation of Biblical Universalism. There are many other authors to consider. Chan's focus solely on Bell shows that he's not really serious about a Biblical critique against the claims of Universalism. I would suggest (as I plan to do myself) that you read as many different interpretations of the Biblical text as you can possibly cram inside your brain, then remind yourself of one simple truth... NO ONE HAS EVER GONE TO HEAVEN OR HELL AND CAME BACK TO TELL US EXACTLY WHAT IT'S LIKE. And that includes the writers of the Bible. Is it fascinating? Yea, of course it is. Will it continue to capture our imaginations? You bet it will. We will ever know what happens next before we actually get there? Not likely! When in doubt, I usually turn to N.T. Wright for a fresh perspective. His interpretation of both heaven and hell strikes me as deeply profound in that he argues that the focus of the Biblical text, and specifically the focus of Jesus' teachings, are that what matters most is our life here on earth and the way we live now! Not what happens next. "On earth as it is in heaven".(excerpt from "Surprised by Hope")"Part of the difficulty of the topic, as with the others we have been studying, is that the word 'hell' itself conjures up an image gained more from medieval imagery than from the earliest Christian writings. Just as many who were brought up to think of God as a bearded old gentleman sitting on a cloud decided that, when they stopped believing in such a being, they had therefore 'stopped believing in God', so many who were taught to think of hell as a literal underground location full of worms and fire, or for that matter as a kind of torture chamber at the centre of God's castle of heavenly delights, decided that, when they stopped believing in that, so they stopped believing in hell. The first group decided that, because they couldn't believe in childish images of God, they must be atheists. The second decided that, because they couldn't believe in childish images of hell, they must be universalists... But, at least at a popular level, it is not the serious early Christian doctrine of final judgment that has been rejected, but one or other gross caricature."(more from "Surprised by Hope")"The most common New Testament word sometimes translated as 'hell' is Gehenna. Gehenna was a place, not just an idea: it was the rubbish heap outside the south-west corner of the old city of Jerusalem......But, as with his [Jesus'] language about 'heaven', so with his talk of Gehenna: once Christian readers had been sufficiently distanced from the original meaning of the words, alternative images would come to mind, generated not by Jesus or the New Testament, but by the stock of images, some of theme extremely lurid, supplied by ancient and medieval folklore and imaginationThe point is that when Jesus was warning his hearers about Gehenna he was not, as a general rule, telling them that unless they repented in this life they would burn in the next one. As with God's kingdom, so with its opposite: it is on earth that things matter, not somewhere else. His message to his contemporaries was stark, and (as we would say today) 'political'. Unless they turned back from their hopeless and rebellious dreams of establishing God's kingdom in their own terms, not least through armed revolt against Rome, then the Roman juggernaut would do what large, greedy and ruthless empires have always done to smaller countries (not least in the Middle East) who resources they covet or whose strategic location they are anxious to guard. Rome would turn Jerusalem into a hideous, stinking extension of its own smouldering rubbish heap. When Jesus said 'unless you repent, you will all likewise perish', that is the primary meaning he had in mind."(and still more...)"We cannot therefore look to Jesus' teaching for any fresh detail on whether there really are some who finally reject God, and who as it were have that rejection ratified. All the signs, of course, are that he went along with the normal first-century perception: there would indeed be such people, with the only surprise being the one experienced, by sheep and goats alike, both at their fate and at the evidence on which it was based. And the early Christian writers go along with this. Hell, and/or final judgment, is not a major topic in the letters (though when it comes, it is very important, as for instance in Romans 2.1-16); it is not mentioned at all in Acts; and the vivid pictures towards the end of the book of Revelation, while being extremely important, have always proved among the hardest parts of scripture to interpret with any certainty. All this should warn us against the cheerful double dogmatism which has bedevilled discussion of these topics - the dogmatism, that is, both of the person who knows exactly who is and who isn't 'going to hell', and that of the universalist who is absolutely certain that there is no such place, or that if there is it will, at the last, be empty."Both Chan and Bell are dangerously close to pitching their tents in the "double dogmatism" camp. (Although Bell does not claim to be a universalist, so I would argue that Chan is much farther into this camp.) I have to remind myself constantly that my purpose on this earth is not to 'save souls' for some great afterlife (of which, I used to feel incredibly guilty and inadequate with my life when this used to be my worldview), but to use my God-given talents, skills, interests, desires, longings to transform my world here and now, in an attempt to establish the Kingdom of God "on earth as it is in heaven". How does one do this? "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" (Luke 10:27) To be honest, I am not encouraged to love my neighbor when I view them as headed for an eternity of punishment and suffering. No, unlike Chan's claim that this should make us love more wholly, this only depresses me and makes me feel ashamed about my beliefs. This makes the "good news" anything but good news. But when I view them as one of God's image-bearers, one of God's many projects that he longs to redeem and bring into right relationship with Himself, than all of a sudden my heart is transformed toward my neighbor and I feel nothing but love and respect for them. I haven't decided their future destiny for them. I haven't made any judgment about them being lost and myself being saved. I don't know about you but I'm sticking with the theology that actually helps me to produce good fruit.

What really matters in life is not what we believe but the truth. We may believe that the Earth is flat or that the Sun revolves around the Earth, but what counts is reality. The Bible is replete with obscure, incomprehensible passages, especially in the writings of Paul, that can be twisted to support almost any argument. If one tries to distort or twist some of these passages to support the absurd, then analysis must be made to see if the argument runs counter to the overwhelming treatment of the matter in Scripture as well as common sense. This is what the authors have done in "Erasing Hell" for which they are to be commended. A truly absurd doctrine is universalism or universal reconciliation which teaches that there is no Hell or if it does exist, it will end at some time. If this doctrine were true, one might ask why Jesus is called the "Savior". What exactly was He saving us from if not Hell of which He gives at least fifteen forceful warnings about "everlasting fire". Why did He spend the last three years of His life seeking to save souls and endure a horrific Passion and Death? Why did He tell us that "many will be called, but few will be chosen"? Another absurd doctrine is the teaching that after death a soul may have a "second chance". No where in Scripture is this taught, but the opposite. Jesus relates numerous parables telling us to remain alert to sudden death and the consequences if we are not. Mortal life is clearly a training period in which we must prove our worth for "everlasting life". "Erasing Hell" is a welcome antidote for current preaching of only half of the Gospel-the part that is not controversial and everyone likes-God's love for all no matter what they do. No mention of the other part of the Gospel-God's infinite justice and the 10 commandments.

I have been considering Evangelical universalism, and this book helped me see that although it would be nice to believe that everyone ends up in heaven, there are too many logical problems with that view. It's based on a sentimentality that seeks to fit God into our mold. This book, on the other hand, helps me wrestle to let God be God, recognize that His thoughts are infinitely higher than mine, and what seems like divine unfairness, is really God being His unfathomable self.

Overall, it's a good read and it is over a topic that Christianity as a whole is certainly losing. In particular this book seems to offer counter-points to Rob Bell's "Love-Wins." Regardless, considering that this life is immensely brief when compared to eternity, and as Christians who believe you will either spend eternity in heaven or hell, we really don't spend a lot of time discussing either. This book helps give the courage to answer truthfully and honestly when confronted with the tough questions about hell. For example: "I am not a Christian, but I am a good person. Does that mean I'm going to hell?"However, all that being said, the book is kind of repetitive in nature. In essence I began to feel as though the authors were beating a dead horse. To Christians who may be a little more mature in their faith, this book doesn't really seem to express any new ideas that a stout believer is not already aware of, has addressed, and/or applies these lessons into their daily life.In essence, I would recommend this book to a newer group of believers who may still not fully understand the concepts of heaven and hell. Believers whom are still disillusioned by the myths and half truths that the world (and even some Christian churches) can spew out about hell. Or, this could also be a good read for any of the "Universalist" Christians out there who hold to the doctrine that "all will be saved one day, and no one really goes to hell."But again, overall a good read and worth picking up.

Review:Gordie Howe is one of the few athletes who is recognized by people who are not fans of the sport in which he or she played. He was the first player to have played in the NHL during five decades and held all career scoring records at the time of his retirement in 1980. While these may have been broken by Wayne Gretzky, Howe remains as popular as ever and the release of this autobiography was a much-anticipated book. While he tells of his tales growing up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with reverence and also how he became an NHL player at the tender age of 18 without sounding too self-serving, this book doesn’t really reveal any great new details about the man, nor does it stray away from the tried-and-true format for sports biographies. This doesn’t mean it is a boring book or one that should be avoided – it just didn’t have anything that lived up to the hype. There are some touching moments when he talks about his personal life. I especially enjoyed when he included letters that he and his wife Colleen wrote to each other – both when they were courting and when he was away at training camp or on the road. There are also letters written by his sons included in the book and they helped the reader picture the man off the ice.Plenty of the book does deal with his career on the ice and about the business of hockey. Most of his career took place when the NHL had only six teams and both the game and the business was vastly different than it is today. Howe’s stories paint a good picture of what those times were like, and he is careful not to criticize either the game at that time or today’s players. The best section of the book when he talks about his playing days is late in the book, when he played alongside his two older sons, Marty and Mark (the latter joined his dad in the Hockey Hall of Fame). It is obvious he was beaming with pride when he had the chance to do this, even if his body was not cooperating. The narration provided by Hagen is also good. Like the content of the book, it was solid but not spectacular. But then, it matched the tone Howe had when he played. He was mostly a gentleman but when he had to be tough, he was. Overall, this was a good book to listen to while commuting and one that hockey fans will enjoy as long as they are not looking for something spectacular.Did I skim?NoDo I recommend? While it wasn’t much different than other sports biographies, this book will be one that fans of either Howe or the Red Wings will enjoy. Readers who also like celebrity biographies will enjoy it as well, especially the stories of Howe and his sons.

I am a huge hockey fan and had a chance to see Gordie Howe play at the end of his career. I wanted to read his book after reading Derek Sanderson's and Bobby Orr's books. Sanderson's book was a lot of hyperbole but fun, Orr's book was dull as watching paint dry. Mr. Hockey on the other hand was a delight. Gordie's description of his childhood during the depression brought out a sense of reality and pathos but ultimately some hope. His thoughts about the people of Saskatoon helping each other and ultimately helping him succeed rang true and lacked the disingenuous feel of so many other biographies. Howe is real and as he gets into his hockey life and career I am reminded of a mix of two movies "Slapshot" and "Young Blood". There is just something about the inside world of hockey that enthralls hockey fans. And yet Howe's writing reaches beyond that. He is Detroit of the Golden years,40's, 50's, 60's. And so much of his hockey is from the Golden years of 6 teams and rivalries that mattered. It's not what we have now, I can't get excited about Nashville playing Tampa Bay. But the strength of the book resounds with the importance of family. Gordie Howe playing on the same line with his sons is unprecedented in any sport and it is priceless. Hockey fan or not Mr. Hockey won't disappoint.

This is the first hockey book I have ever read and I struck gold. Naturally I have been familiar with Gordie Howe's accomplishments with the Detroit Red Wings and have heard of several of the players mentioned in the book but I wouldn't know a red line from a blue line. Gordie Howe had the distinction of playing professional hockey in five different decades from the 1940s and into 1980 and his reason for being able to accomplish this fete is due to his love for the game.Howe mentions his feelings of family that the Red Wings' franchise promoted and he bought into but found this not to be true as far as ownership relationships with its players were concerned. Howe relates his philosophy in dealing with opposing players on the ice and dealing with retribution whenever necessary.A special thrill for Gordie Howe took place when he joined the Houston Aeros of the WHA and teamed up his two of his sons, Mark and Marty, for four seasons. He concluded his career with two seasons with the New England Whalers of the WHA and the Hartford Whalers of the NHL. The last chapter is written by his three sons and daughter in which they relate the death of their mother and the trials and tribulations that their father has now been experiencing. As I write this Gordie Howe has since suffered a stroke and remains in critical condition. I am not a hockey fan but I chose well in purchasing this book and adding it to my ever-growing library. I'm sure you will enjoy it as well.

Growing up in a suburb of Detroit in 1940-50 and a sports enthusiast, I watched Gordie Howe many times in the old Olympia stadium. When I saw this book on the list, there was no hesitation in buying it. Like most sport's people I knew a lot about the games. Now I have learned more about the person. No one who follows hockey will ever forget this person. One of my favorite memories was of one of his fights. Gordie had been picked on all night but never to the degree of the other player getting a penalty. About the middle of the third period Gordie and the other player ended up in the corner of the rink. Gordie proceeded to teach the other player to not do what he was doing to him. The officials took about 30-45 seconds to go to the scorers table to check on something. After a short time they returned to break up the one-sided fight. Gordie never had a problem with this player again.. I have been following his fight with his health these last few weeks and hope only the best for him. A must read for any hockey or sports enthusiast. Ed
