He keeps referring to his "system". What system?? Here's what this book boils down to. "throw balls on the table randomly. Now shoot them in. Do it again. Go play against better players. Rinse and repeat." Another review mentioned "that diagrams were easy to follow" What?! Did he even read the book? There are no diagrams. There are some pictures of balls randomly thrown on the table. And I don't even know what the purpose of the pictures was. He already had told us to throw the balls randomly on the table.Towards the end of the book he says. "if you did not improve like you thought you would, one of the reasons could be that you are as good as you are likely to get." LOL. There are so many parts in this book that made me laugh and they had me wondering if this was a real book meant to be taken seriously or some kind of social experiment to see how people would react to it.Luckily I only paid $3 for it. But some people might feel ripped off after reading it.
I just read this book cover to cover and I can't wait to try out Imler's methods. He writes in a very easy to understand way, and I can sense that he is a natural coach just by the way he understands and explains the game. I love how he emphasizes the importance of safety play in the game of 8 ball, while practicing other games - such as 9 ball - in order to help your overall fundamentals improve. I'm looking forward to any other books he may write about pool.
With all respect to Michael Imler, let me save you the $3. In a nutshell Mike sez: Establish a practice routine that addresses the skills you need to shoot pool well, and stick with it until you get better, and if you don't, the you probably should pick another hobby.
The writer presents a clearly defined set of skills/tools to improve your game. Great for neophyte players with some understanding and trying to improve their game without hiring an individual in person coach.
Nice easy read. Some of you are no doubt already using these techniques, but what the book gives you is discipline and measurement. I will re-visit my review in a year's time and update it based on results. A fine effort; I am pleased with this purchase.
Don't buy this book unless you are serious about putting the time in. Directions and diagrams are clear and easy to follow.
This book appeared to be useful. I am taking the suggestions to heart (and to table).
