As an ultra-"crunchy" mama of 5, I consider this book to be made for those who dabble in alternative/natural "medicine", not for those who deeply trust in their spiritual and physical bodies. The wording was a bit harsh at times, intimidating, and even fear-promoting. Personally, I felt the recommendations were often too mainstream and entrenched in Western Medicine. I have a collection of over 50 natural birth books, and this is by far my least favorite.

My goodness. This book is AWESOME. When I was prepping to have my first baby I wanted to approach the process more naturally, but had a hard time finding reliable information on my options. Every book I looked into offered only conventional methods. On the flip side, the resources for a natural approach (mostly online) lacked the science and evidence based research I craved. I had to look in a ton a different places to try to find what I was looking for...and didn't know who or what to trust! Now, with my second baby, I feel more empowered in my education and decisions...but it wasn't easy to get there. (This book arrived about a month after my second little bundle, but being the baby junkie that I am I had to get my hands on it ASAP!)This book is extensively informational, and offers well researched information for every approach to pregnancy and labor. It lists the options, facts, possible risks, and benefits for every detail of the process. I truly feel it's the *perfect* book for EVERY MAMA TO BE--weather you lean natural or not--because information and options = power!I love this book so much that I even ordered a few copies to gift and share with others! <3 :]

I'm a mom of three, a doula and a childbirth educator, and when I found out that Mama Natural was coming out with a pregnancy and childbirth guide, I was beyond excited. I KNEW this would be amazing and after receiving the book, I was right! The first thing you'll notice are the beautiful illustrations that draw your eye in to the page. I love that Genevieve included recipes in each chapter and other helpful tips for a pregnant mom. The most important part is the information, though. This book is packed full so that you can understand your pregnancy week by week and also make informed decisions for the birth YOU want. There are sections on natural birth, interventions you can expect during labor, support for VBAC moms and also how to get that gentle cesarean you might want. She leaves no one behind.This book is perfect for the new mom who is just venturing into the world of pregnancy and childbirth, and also for the seasoned mother who might want to change her outcome. It has a natural point of view for a natural process and empowers women. We CAN give birth how we want.**I received this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.**

My first run-in with Mama Natural took place on Pinterest. We’ll call it an e-meeting of sorts. I’m always pinning useful information for later and Mama Natural has LOTS of it!Prior to reviewing this book, I completed the Mama Natural Birth Course as part of my Doula Certification work and it is also– AMAZINGFirst and foremost, I love rich color and an easy to read text— this book had all of that.Secondly, It has great illustrations— and not just the typical diagrams you wouldexpect to see in a pregnancy planning book. There are illustrations of the author and her spouse, example mothers, some of the diagrams you would expect, and even illustrations of sample meals that one might try to prepare to switch up their weekly routine. I would also like to highlight here that the images are drawn illustrations– not just photographs (though I’m not opposed to photos)– that gave it a really personal touch to me. If you read a good number of these books, you become accstomed to seeing certain photos and images and this was a nice change of pace.It includes a week-by-week guide to pregnancy and childbirth from a natural perspective. I shared a bit of my personal testimony of wanting to eliminate as many commercial medications and medical interventions as possible in one of my older posts. It is important to me that I seek out knowledge to prepare myself for a natural pregnancy and to support my friends and family who are currently having babies and who desire to do so naturally. KNOWLEDGE is POWER!Her week-by-week tips include some of the most practical and helpful information I’ve seen. It was like having all of the best Pinterst Pins in one place! There are recipes, affirmations, and useful tips — like how to use your existing wardrobe throughout pregnancy and when/how to decide if any items are worth adding to your collection.The book doesn’t stop at the week-by-week tips and advice for during pregnancy, it also includes labor and post partum and one part that I thought was very important was that pregnancy loss was included. As someone who is both a trained Social Worker and Doula, I understand that loss and post partum symptoms are often two big “elephants in the room.” Many are uncomfortable with discussing with them and if a mother experiences either (or both) she can be left feeling isolated and with no recourse. One of the greatest way to overcome the stigma is to talk about these issues— these births matter and mothers who experience post partum symptoms (baby blues, depression, etc.) are not alone and are STILL good mothers!I’ll stop there, before I get all the way up on my soapbox.Long story short, I really love this book.I purchased a Kindle copy for my personal use and will definitely be buying others to give away as gifts– it’s just THAT awesome!I highly recommend that you add it to your collection if you’re in the market for this type of book. It could also make a great gift for soon-to-be or future mothers in your life.

I wanted to like this book so much! It’s definitely not a week-by-week guide. There’s barely two paragraphs on what’s happening on certain weeks. I’m going to admit I’m only on week 6 and will continue reading but honestly I’ve skipped over a lot because of her condescending tone and attitude towards women that may want to have their babies the traditional, medical way in a hospital. She briefly gives her explanation of “benefits” of giving birth in hospitals however it always ends in a “but...”I was expecting more natural health remedies for pregnancy symptoms, diet, organic products for stretch marks and things like that. Maybe I should have started with the typical “What to expect when you’re expecting”.
