This book was ok, but if you like Angela Marsons and Robert Bryndza, you are likely to be disappointed. Not in the same class. This review is necessarily vague because I am trying to avoid spoilers.First. The abandoned baby. Makes perfect sense WHY the baby was abandoned. The reason for the change of heart is never truly explained, and the circumstances around the DNA test are just crazy. I cannot believe the biological father would fall for this explanation -- or lack thereof.Second. The female police officer at the heart of the story had a truly abusive husband who passed away when her daughter was only 2. In the story, the daughter is a grown woman with a baby of her own, and she cannot understand why her mom refuses to shell out 2K for a memorial for what would have been the deceased's 50th birthday. The daughter seems to think the deceased was a paragon of virtue. The police officer has never bothered to tell her daughter that the deceased was a monster who beat the crap out of mom and tried to kill her. WHY NOT???? I cannot understand this.Third: The husband of the missing woman does nothing but cry, sob, lose it at every scene except one. I don't have a problem with men crying, but this is way over the top. I was ready to smack him myself. Seriously? every single scene? and he's got two young kids depending on him?I'm not saying don't read it. I'm saying that I did read it all the way to the end but if I knew at the beginning what I knew at the end I probably would have passed on it.
4 Bold Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟Well, this was absolutely a wonderful start to this new series.... I might need to rethink my entire I don’t necessarily always like police procedurals thing... because the last few I have really enjoyed.... maybe I like them better when they take place in the UK? so I should modify it to I don’t always necessarily enjoy police procedurals unless they take place in the UK....This series focuses on Gina Hart a detective somewhere in the UK.... i’m sure the exact setting of this book was mentioned, however it is not coming to mind and it doesn’t even matter because the plot and the characters were so fabulous.... I usually focus a lot on the characters and I did like Gina and I’m really looking forward to see her character grow throughout the series... however I have to give it to this amazing plot it kept me enthralled....What would you do if your wife the mother of your children went missing without a trace? What if it was your daughter who went missing? How would you handle the day today, how would you move on? And what would you do when a baby who was abandoned at the library turned out to be a DNA match to your missing wife/Daughter? Debra has been missing for over four years and now little baby Isabel has turned up... her mother is Debra, but where is Debra? Not only did we get the point of view of Gina, but we also got the point of view of Luke Debra‘s husband and Deborah herself..... oh and I mustn’t forget the point of view of Debra‘s kidnapper and he was as creepy and delusional as you would expect....Really enjoyed how the story unraveled.... you know the kidnapper was somebody who had some connection to Debra’s life, but who was it? Love all the different points of views... couldn’t even imagine how Luke would deal with the situation especially because he had just begun dating somebody else.... and I have to admit I always enjoy being in the mind of the antagonist... Love the thought process of the crazy person especially how they justify their actions.....Strongly recommend to fans of crime fiction, police procedurals, and a book with a very strong plotline.....*** thank you so much too Bookouture and Net Galley for a copy of this book ***
I don't usually read detective series but something about this cover and the description drew me in. I absolutely loved this book and DI Gina Harte is my new heroine! Deborah Jenkins is kidnapped as she leaves work and heads for home. Four years later, as her husband decides it is time for him to move on with his life, a new development leads him to believe she is still alive. As Deborah's case is reopened, there are lots of new developments and DI Harte and her crew work diligently to solve the case. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next book in this series. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a really good read.
A woman disappears without a trace, the only thing left behind is her shoe. 4 years later a newborn baby girl is abandoned at the library. As the investigators try to identify the baby, they receive a mysterious phone call urging them to test the DNA of the baby. The test results are shocking as they reveal that the mother of the baby is the woman who disappeared four years ago. This story has twists that you don't expect. Follow the investigators as they scramble to find the baby's mother and bring her safely home.
This book was not suspenseful or gripping in the least! It’s one thing if an author focuses on details to build great characters or to develop the plot, but it’s a completely different thing when an author throws in everything and the kitchen sink just to try to bulk up a book to try to give it more pages and distract a reader. This book dragged on for no reason what so ever. There were so many unnecessary aspects and pieces that should have been edited out of this book, it was ridiculous! With about 20% left to the book, there was a bit of some build up—FINALLY! I thought this book would never end and when it finally did end, it was disappointing! Save your time and your money and read a different book! I highly recommend White Lies by Lucy Dawson for a GREAT TWISTED THRILLER and The Last Girl by Nick Twist.
