I am a tremendous fan of Rev. Adam Hamilton and have read 16 of his books. The reason I say this is because I do not want to be critical of Revival in any way. If you are looking for a book providing a biography of John Wesley, I think you will be disappointed with this book. In fact, Hamilton says in his introduction that he is not trying to write a book telling about the beliefs and practices of Wesley. There are many fine books that do this by authors like Henry Rack, Kenneth Collins, Stephen Tomkins, Robert Tuttle, and Ronald Stone to name a few. What sets this book apart from many of the others is that Hamilton reviews Wesley's life with brief historical comments, examples of his faith, experiences finding his true meaning of salvation and trials causing him to question his own salvation. Hamilton verbally paints a psychological picture of Wesley's beliefs, personal conflicts, and motivational stimuli that drives the founder of Methodism to establish practices different than the Church of England and the theologies of his time. But Hamilton evens goes further by bringing a personal touch throughout the book through inserting examples from his church and pastoral experience. I don't think anyone will be disappointed if they realize this is not a historical biography.

Adam Hamilton takes his readers on a journey to England to explore the life of John Wesley and the founding of the Methodist church. His story examines the conviction of worship ( and sometimes lack of) during John Wesley's life and how Wesley and his followers set about making true disciples of Christ. The importance of head and heart are emphasized. Passion to follow Christ (heart) but also study of the Bible ( head) is an integral part of Christianity for Methodists. This book also focus on the need to serve the poor, the sick, the imprisoned not to be saved but because of salvation we are called to walk as Christ walked. A good read for any Christian but of particular interest to those who practice the Methodist faith.

This book by noted Methodist pastor and thinker Adam Hamilton is one of his best works, and one of - if not THE - best Methodist "primers" out there. History, Theology, reflection and exhortation are wrapped up in this clearly-written and easily accessible work. This one is for anyone from confirmand, to new member, to life-long disciple, to seminary professor, to pastor to "read, mark, learn and inwardly digest." Worth your money to buy it, your time to study it - and your application to everyday discipleship.

Hamilton is a master when it comes to converting sermon series into small group studies. Most Methodist churches with which I have been associated seem to have drifted away from Wesley. This series is a good way to reconnect.

This book was very interesting and informative about the life of John Wesley. Since I am a life long Methodist, I knew some things about Wesley, but learned a lot from the book that I did not know. The only negative I had was that the author would inject some things into the story of his own dealings as a pastor which disrupted the flow and would have been better placed at the end of each chapter. We used this book as a guide in a Bible study class.

Good. It gave our group a good understanding of Wesley's faith and practices. I did find it somewhat spiritually uplifting. I did not feel as excited as I did with his "The Journey" and "24 Hours That Saved the World". We also used the DVD. It was nice to see Hamilton in the buildings and lands where Wesley grew and flourished. However, the DVD did not provide additional information to the book as did "The Journey" and "24 Horus That Saved the World". I also used the leader's guide. It was helpful, but not as much as I usually expect from leaders's guides.

Written authoritatively, the information is interesting to Methodists and others curious about how successful churches work. Successful churches are perceived personally relevant to those who seriously want to grow spiritually. I feel well informed about John and Charles Wesley's role and intent; and the impact they made thorough persistence through personal as well as the great religious and social difficulties of their era. The book may help nominal Christians to get more involved in their church's small groups to facilitate working together to make a difference. For me Adam Hamilton's book is a model for understanding the beneficial impact of small groups who intentionally take on a role of leadership in the areas their church needs clarity, alignment, focus and movement through actively involved lay leadership.

We read this as a group at church and did a study on it every week until it was completed. It was a very easy read and was nothing of what I thought it would be. I enjoyed reading about Wesley and how and where he lived. My heart broke for him as he lost his love but then soared when he found another in God!! I recommend this as a study for a group or an individual. We also used the dvd with it as well and it had many shots of the places where Wesley visited or lived or preached. This helped with picturing everything instead of just reading about it.

For the most part, this is an interesting book. There wasn't much that I hadn't heard before, here and there. But, it is useful to have it all in one place. The basic content was good.The problem with this book is that really someone needed to do a better job of reviewing the details before printing. There are lots of little errors that don't really affect the core substance of the book, but they are distracting nonetheless. Some of the errors are just silly, like tigers roaming the African savanna. Tigers do not live in Africa, they live in Asia. Others just need more specificity, like claiming Newtonian collisions would look the same forward and backward. That is only true if the collisions are perfectly elastic. Inelastic collisions would not look the same forward and backward. Other things just need to be consistent, like near the beginning of the book the author claims that it does not make sense to talk about the rate we travel through time; then near the end he writes about everything traveling through time at the speed of light (if it is stationary in space). I took the difference to be due to the Newtonian model of the universe versus the relativistic model of the universe, but it should be explained. Other statements just need some evidence, like at the beginning of the universe there was one billion antimatter particles for every one billion and one matter particles. Where does that numerical estimate come from? Other explanations are incomplete, like claiming that entropy increases because the state at the beginning of the universe was highly ordered and there was only one direction to go. That argument is valid at the beginning of the universe, but why does entropy continue to increase today, now that the universe is far less ordered. Not everything changes monotonically. Obviously entropy is still increasing, based on observation, but the reasoning in the book is not very satisfying.But, I don't want to be too negative. It is worth reading the book to get an understanding of how time fits into our current model of the universe.

I've read all 3 of the books in this series. The first doesn't resolve the tension between relativity and quantum mechanics but it does show that some resolution must (eventually) be possible. The second introduces a novel theory of gravity and its implications for cosmic expansion but depends for its reality on just how much of the physical universe we can actually see. This third book connects time to the inertial motion imparted to everything in the universe by the Big Bang and provides a basis for time's arrow and dimensional properties. There are a few other recent books from cosmologists that try to explain how integrated space-time can be understood to function by non-physicists. In my opinion Dr. Thomas' explanation in this book is the clearest of them all.All three books in the series are accessible reads for the non-technically trained Dr. Thomas may or may not prove to be correct in his views by future developments in physics and cosmology, but he does offer a refreshing viewpoint and novel approach to resolving some of the present mysteries in these fields.

Hidden in Plain Sight 3: The secret of time by “Andrew Thomas”“Hidden in Plain Sight 3" is part of a wonderful series of science books by physicist, Dr. Andrew Thomas. In his third book of the series, he considers what is time. Using physics only as a guide Thomas takes the reader on a journey that consists of going through the data and reaching an interesting conclusion. I’m not a physicist so I can’t validate his interesting conclusion but the ride has certainly expanded my understanding of the concepts presented. This enjoyable 169-page book includes the following ten chapters: 1. Introduction, 2. The Speed of Light, 3. Synchronicity, 4. Spacetime, 5. The Arrow of Time, 6. Time Dilation, 7. Inertia, 8. Universal Speed, 9. Energy and Momentum, and 10. The Secret of Time.Positives:1. A well-written, succinct, accessible book for the masses.2. The fascinating topic of time in the hands of an inquisitive mind.3. Does a wonderful job of introducing concepts and/or scientific principles to the readers at an enjoyable and accessible level.4. Great use of charts, illustrations and tables to assist readers. I can’t stress that enough.5. Provides a brief history of time. “The first public clock was installed in Orvieto in Italy in 1307, and this innovation spread rapidly throughout the rest of Europe.”6. Find out what Galileo’s greatest contribution was. It may not be what you are thinking.7. Great respect for Maxwell. “And according to Richard Feynman: "From a long view of the history of mankind — seen from, say, ten thousand years from now — there can be little doubt that the most significant event of the 19th century will be judged as Maxwell's discovery of the laws of electrodynamics.”8. The recurring theme of the Copernican principle. “The Copernican principle states that no point — and no observer — in the universe holds a privileged position. It certainly seems reasonable to assume that the laws of physics apply equally to all observers — the universe is a very equitable place.”9. Plenty of quotes of wisdom. “As Sherlock Holmes said: ‘When you have eliminated the impossible, all that remains, however improbable, must be the truth.’"10. Interesting look at reality based on perspective. “It shows that merely by moving relative to each other, two observers inhabit different realities. It is as if they inhabit two different universes.”11. An interesting look at spacetime. The most intriguing chapter of the book is the chapter on spacetime. “Time is not actually moving — there are just multiple copies of you stretched-out through spacetime. The moving "now" slice is just an illusion of human perception.” “We do not exist as points in time, we are "stretched-out" as world lines from birth to death — like a millipede. This is the reality of our existence in spacetime.”12. Provocative statements. “So what science and logic seems to be telling us is that the sensation we have of movement through time is nothing more than an illusion generated by our brains!”13. Interesting connection between entropy and biology. “We can clearly also view the accumulation of DNA errors as an inevitable result of increasing entropy. This explains why cancer is an predominately a disease of old age.”14. The concept of time dilation. “So if simultaneity is affected by relative motion, then time itself must be affected by relative motion (remember: time itself is defined by simultaneous events).”15. The laws of motion revisited.16. A bold conclusion. “So the speed of light is not a universal speed limit at all, it is just the speed that everything is moving — in spacetime.”17. How the properties of energy and momentum add to the understanding of objects in motion and hence time. “This provides us with a general result: a stationary object moves through time at the speed of light. The only reason the object appears stationary to our eyes is because we are travelling through time at exactly the same speed!”18. Remarkable results…not going to spoil it.19. Further reading material provided.20. A great Kindle value.Negatives:1. Speculative conclusion that hasn’t been validated by the scientific community. However, makes a compelling argument to this layperson.2. Some concepts in theoretical physics are very hard to understand even at the most accessible level.3. Dr. Thomas is an engaging author and scientist who does a wonderful job of building up his case to a revealing conclusion.
