Let me preface this review with the fact that I am an engineer, not an artist, and know almost nothing about art. That said... Kandinsky is one of my favorite artists, and I have a reproduction of "Composition VIII" hanging on my living room wall. The book contains many good quality pictures of Kandinsky's paintings throughout his life, showing his different styles, interspersed with text about his life. The writing is at times a bit pretentious and/or "etherial" for me. I would have preferred the descriptions of the paintings and reasons for the changings in style to be a bit more "concrete", but as I said, I'm not an artist. I also would have liked a bit more discussion of his childhood, how he got into painting, and synesthesia in general. But, given the book's very reasonable price, if you buy the book, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent information on one of my favorite artists. Good quality reprints of paintings but did not include some of his best known works and that's why I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars.

I wanted a book with color photos of some of Kandinsky's best paintings. This little inexpensive book fit the bill. Highly recommended.

Perfect and simple way to introduce the idea of ecosystems to tiny toddlers. Contains safari, polar, desert, ocean, rain forest, and outback scenes that include plants and animals that live in each of those areas. Many animal species are labeled and some even have cool facts. Some animals are revealed when lift up flaps. Flaps are more complicated and the sentences longer so I would say age 2-3 would be best for this book.

This colorful and engaging book immediately held my nephew's attention upon opening. It introduces some unusual animals and divided them up by habitat. It seems to give excellent information (but I just browsed, didn't read the whole book in entirety). Looks and feels sturdy enough for many repeated readings. I will get this book for my other toddler and preschool age nieces and nephews in the future!

We own 3 our of 4 of these books!!! (Who, moo & zoo) we truly adore the storylines, graphics and vivid pictures and my 1 year old lives looking under the thick bulky flaps! Makes it so much easier to not rip or bend, which made me buy more ASAP! I love they have proper animal names for both the male & female & baby animals! Very rare in a toddler book! Highly recommend to any child’s collection!

This is one of the flap books out there. The flaps and book are very sturdy and we have no fear of them ripping out like in some of our other books. The book is also informative! Lots of information about animals and habitats. What I really love is that this book points out that polar bears and penguins DO NOT live the same place. With all other books, I have to remind my kids of that since arctic animals are usually grouped together. I was pleasantly surprised when this book stated that they do not live together.

Purchased as a gift and I wish I had bought only these. The flaps are very easy to open, the pictures are vibrant, the story isn't painful (if you've read a book that repeats itself you know what I mean). Happy to have found these, will purchase again.

We got this for our 18 month old and she absolutely loves it. The book is super sturdy and it’s easy for her to flip the flaps and pages (with supervision)

I've read quite a few books on New Orleans and decided to add this one to my collection. Also, I love the Images of America books. They are vivid and unique looks into the in our ever changing times. This book is a series which collects historic photographs of New Orleans Cemeteries with a great many vintage photographs and engravings of the many cemeteries that dot this historic city. Each section gives a short, informative history of the area surrounding the graves and how the burial grounds came to be. My favorite section and reason for obtaining this book is the Girod Street Cemetery. There are photos of the overgrown and derelict graveyard that was allowed to deteriorate in such a fashion that the Church deconsecrated the land and demolished the tombs. I feel this book is a must for anyone who is interested in New Orleans.

Nice book...heavy on images and less on narrative as most books from Arcadia...would have given higher marks if it had included a map to show where the cemeteries are in the city rather than just street names, which mean little to a tourist planning a trip...the photographs were well-chosen but were not reproduced well...some were very dark...the best part of the book was his showing some of the motifs and icons on the vaults and markers...my favorites were mentions of yellow fever, volunteer firemen, and - especially - an exceptional engraving showing a steamboat explosion. Looking forward to my visit to New Orleans in June.

We just went to NOLA and actually toured one of these cemeteries. I wanted to see what we missed in the other lots and this book helped point out the important sites we missed. I always enjoy the historical facts that these books include in their pages. I trust this series and enjoy their books.

This book is a nifty resource for anyone visiting New Orleans cemeteries. It provides background information on the vast cities of the dead which inhabit New Orleans and also looks at the statuary and mausoleums found within their boundaries as well as their histories and the people interred there.What moved me and surprised me was that unlike virtually the rest of the United States, the cemeteries in New Orleans are virtually all above ground due to the precarious water table of the region. Some of the cemeteries are more reminiscent of the great cemeteries in Europe with wall-to-wall mausoleums and main boulevards running through lavishly landscaped grounds, but in some instances they are meant to be traveled by foot down compact walkways.that wind through ruins.New Orleans is a diverse city with a unique flavor and infinite variety. It's cemeteries reflect that diversity and variety and that is why this book resonates.

It was a refreshing read from my perspective and a very well crafted first effort. The stories are easily relatable and well portrayed. I truly appreciated the stories that intertwined the lives of the two homeless folks. The exploration of the causes, consequences, horror and redemption was particularly moving. This is a worthwhile book that you will enjoy reading and sharing.

I got this book via Kindle for iPhone so that I would have something to read for a rather long road trip. Just to let you know, this book didn't even last half the trip on the first day. Once I started I couldn't put it down. The stories are real. Some are funny, some make you think, and yet others might just bring a tear to your eye. I can't wait for this author to bring more of his story telling to print...but until then, I guess I will just have to read this one over and over again.

This is a wonderful collection of short stories! I love that some were funny, some made me cry, and they all made me think. I also enjoyed reading about a pastor's life and the ministry. Now I need to read Jamie's other stories!

Each story is drawn from careful theological reflection on some area of life. As a whole they bring out wonder and love of God, the complexity of the attempt to follow God faithfully, and the sorrows, joys, and frustrations of life. A worthy read!

“The Haunting of Pastor Butch Gregory” by Dr. Jamie Greening is not a ghost story. It’s not even (very much) about a character named Butch Gregory. It is instead a short and entertaining collection of stories that will take you to and from unlikely places. These include a trip through the brain of a whale and a transit on a giant space ship travelling across the cosmos bound to colonize a yet-unknown planet. For me this brief and entertaining collection was like looking at a coffee table book full of interesting pictures. I believe that Dr. Greening published his book just because he likes to write. And he’s good at it. But you will read it because you like to read. Based on other material of Greening’s I have read I can’t see the author of “The Haunting of Pastor Butch Gregory” writing an encyclopedia, a study or a tome. Instead, like his other works in print, this book will read fast. But unlike most books you read and set aside, this little book will linger with you. The stories were good alone and in tandem. There were page turning moments and moments where I wanted to stop and think. There were lovely little stories that stood alone and stories that tied into great ideas. A great read.

So, when she finds this series of podcasts named ‘Sorry Not Sorry’, she is determined to get more out of life. What I really liked about Charlotte is that she could be any one of us. She wasn’t this super-thin super-unreal super-woman, but just a relatable person with recognizable problems.It was never TOO bad, which was how I liked it. Just a broadening of her horizon. Spreading her wings. Pushing her boundaries. Flirting. Not saying no to everything. Small steps. And that started out with innocent things like calling a guy after asking his phone number. Later on, it gets a bit less innocent…It says laugh-out-loud and yes, it was filled with humour, but no, I never laughed out loud. But I really enjoyed it. It was entertaining, easy-to-read, with a good flow, and I loved it! And it was surprising! Romantic comedies can be predictable, but this one definitely wasn’t!Heat level 4 quite steamyBTW I loved the little references to Gemma from ‘The Truth About Gemma Grey’.

Romance, humor and drama, what more do you need? I found this to be an engaging book that was just perfect for some escape from my reality. The book had me laughing and rolling my eyes at times which I loved. A perfect escape book. I received a copy from NetGalley and the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

This book came up on my Facebook feed as a 99 cent special. It was well worth every penny and more. Loved the characters, the story and especially the plot twists and turns. Can’t wait to read more from this author. Best book I’ve read in a while.

It had what I would call some quality writing, plotting, and characters. At the same time, I had some issues with the same. So you can see where I'm challenged to write this review.Sorry Not Sorry does a great job of portraying the modern dating scene, dealing with roommates, the great marriage divide that happens in your late twenties, and dealing with working a bit too hard while trying to make your way up the ladder. So bravo for portraying that so very well.The book billed itself as a romantic comedy and I would disagree. I think it's a women's fiction book or the not as fashionable chick lit term but romantic comedy? I don't see it.Some of the pacing in the beginning of the book is a bit slow and Charlotte, our main character, spends quite a bit of introspective time during these first few chapters. This is hard to slog through and personally, I think it was hard to connect with Charlotte as a result.I'll say this for Ranald. She can write some characters I really, really disliked. Um hello Bianca - quite possibly the world's worst human. But I guess I felt so much disappointment in so many characters and ultimately it hurt my enjoyment of the book. Charlotte's best friend, who we are told by Charlotte, has been her friend for sooo many years and is such a good friend, completely cold shoulders her based on practically nothing and never even asks her once if what she's hearing is true???? Who does that?Also, Charlotte is, from everything we're told in the book, quite an intelligent woman. So, it beggars the question as to why she didn't see the oh so very, very obvious signs from Myles. It hurts the credibility of the book frankly.However, the ending is good, if a bit odd. If you're looking for a slightly less peppy version of a Sophie Kinsella, this is a good choice for you. Three stars.

Sorry Not Sorry by Sophie Ranald is another contemporary romance novel that promises readers to be full of laugh out loud moments. Again, though I wonder if my sense of humor is way off of everyone else of not when only getting a chuckle here or there and no real hysterical moments unfortunately.In this story Charlotte finds herself questioning just where she is in here life when her two longtime roommates and best friends are packing up and moving on to marriage and a life together after falling in love. Charlotte has her job, and netflix if that will count as a companion but not much else to show as the others move on.Stumbling across a romance podcast called Sorry, Not Sorry Charlotte vows to begin putting herself out there and trying to meet someone. With each challenge that Charlotte masters though it seems things in the rest of her life get a bit more out of control and the dating world is still a scary place.I do believe my biggest drawback with Sorry Not Sorry seemed to be it just seemed to have one angsty moment after another with each turn of the page. I suppose laughter is the best medicine when times are tough but man Charlotte just couldn’t win and somehow that translated to me a few jokes that worked here or there but more feeling sorry for her the rest. It’s not a bad story just not the hysterical one I had hoped for, to me anyway.I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

The Spectral bundle methods outperforms the traditional interior point approaches to SDP's as these methods are typically unable to handle large SDP's with a large number of constraints.This book provides a detailed description of the bundle method for nondifferentiable optimisation. I am going to purchase a copy of this book (I already have volume one with me) and can only strongly recommend the book to anyone interested in nondifferentiable optimisation and semidefinite programming.

The book is well written and covers interesting spots. However, how can one have a travel book without maps? Just a simple state outline with a star for the location would help. If one is not familiar with the state, a map is necessary.

President Trump's card was great--I gave it to my boyfriend for his birthday--he was 75 years old!! We all got a real kick out of it and especially since we are supporters of our President.

How about a road trip into eastern Kentucky to visit Breaks Interstate Park which is referred to as the Grand Canyon of the south? How a bout a road trip to Kingdom Come that overlooks Black Mountain, the highest point in Kentucky? No mention of Fort Harrod or Fort Boonesboro? The book was good as far as it went which wasn't much farther east than Lexington.

Helped make our trip great!

Great book with lots of good ideas. Lovely photographs included along with detailed descriptions of activities.

Ideal book for those interested in finding things to do while visiting Kentucky. Has good 2-4 page overviews of various destinations, with some side information that also proves helpful. Fun book for those traveling.

Makes me want to travel the whole state! And great photos too!

This romance, however, does not occur in a single forest of wizards and necromancers; it covers the globe.Finally, the novel’s focus on a set of memorable individuals personalizes the many-sided story and takes us into the world of what James Ellroy calls ‘tragic realism’, a world in which redemption may be possible but one in which that redemption is very heavily compromised.So Don Winslow’s aspirations here are high. The canvas is huge, taking us from Guatemala to Barcelona, but the principal focus is Mexico (all of Mexico, from Juárez to Chiapas, from Sinaloa to the Gulf, from the remote safe houses to the fashionable condos of the city and coast). Art Keller, the DEA agent who has been fighting the cartels and its patrón, Adán Barrera, for thirty years, are joined by scores of other characters from a host of cartels (and their splinter sects) to a handful of good people, exhibiting courage in the face of overwhelming odds and uncommon cruelty. Some of these characters are menacing and violent to an unprecedented degree; none of them are dull. As the wars (cartel vs. cartel; the governments [and a few brave individuals] vs. the cartels) continue over the course of 600+ pages, several realizations set in.First (as in No Country for Old Men), the money involved is so great that it effects a breakdown in both human behavior and civil society. It is simply irresistible and it is pursued at vast costs, no matter what the consequences might entail. When you can buy a kilo of cocaine for $5,000 and sell it on the European market for $55,000, the temptations make those of Satan or Mephistopheles look like a waiter offering a spoonful of fruit loops to a diabetic.Second, as the violence and desperation escalate, our government ‘agent’ comes to realize that he has now become nothing more than a hunter. On the larger scale, the interactions, actions and reactions, of the governments, the drug traffickers and the agencies of law enforcement create a web of dependency that dissolves the sharp distinctions between good and evil. Ultimately (with governments choosing the lesser of evils among the cartels and with the exportation of drugs as the central element of Mexico’s economy), ‘the cartel’ is everyone, not just a single group of traffickers. Thus, the title, which seems somewhat innocuous, is in fact profound. It describes our very world itself.The novel has been ‘anxiously contemplated’, as Conrad would say. The architecture of the plot is dazzling. We cover ten years of time, hundreds of thousands of square miles of landscape, dozens and dozens of named, important characters and we do so clearly and straightforwardly because of Don Winslow’s guiding hand.I would offer particular praise for the novel’s texture, which is primarily achieved through the use of Spanish expressions, idioms and maxims, and yet the reader can follow this without having any knowledge of Spanish beyond the expressions which commonly occur in crime fiction. Winslow has clearly immersed himself in the language, culture, and history of contemporary Mexico and offered us a hard-earned result that is delivered with a very light touch.The Cartel is now the reigning novel treating modern drug trafficking, Winslow’s finest work (in tandem with The Power of the Dog) and a novel/epic/romance/realistic tragedy that no reader of crime fiction should miss.

Seldom do we see books that are technically fiction but based in hard reality and accurate historical details that match the brilliance of Don Winslow. I strongly encourage readers to read "The Power of the Dog" first, as it is the first half of a horrifying world of the Mexican drug cartels, their internal struggles, the jaw droppingly horrifying atrocities against anybody who dares cross a drug lord's path, or a cartel's. "The Cartel" is the second part of this monumental series, and because the first part is highly suggested as the first one to read, although "The Cartel" stands on its own, I will not get into too many plot details. The primary character, Art Keller, who has many notches on his own belt due to fighting in Vietnam and battles in the "War on Drugs", is a marked man having crossed every drug kingpin of note in Mexico and their paid lackeys like federal troops, corrupt politicians and police forces on all levels, not to mention the extremely violent paramilitary troops who enforce the wishes of the leaders of the notorious Zetas, a cartel that has absolutely no code of honor whatsoever. Whereas the other main character, the head of the Sinoloan cartel, the very crafty and intelligent Adan Barrera, at least gives the impression of leaving innocents alone, the Zetas kill anybody any time, including little street level junkies who are found guilty of buying their dope from Barerra's cartel instead of them, and vice versa. We can remember the horrible wars that racked Cuidad Juarez, the border city across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, where murders were being committed by the scores of victims, many mutilated and tortured and then dismembered and left on city streets as "lessons" for whatever infraction the cartels thought up on any given day. Winslow reports that in this phase of the internecine fighting, as many as close to 16000 Juarez citizens were gruesomely murdered in the space of just a couple of years. While that calamity has subsided somewhat, the worst border crimes focusing in Nuevo Laredo and Laredo, TX, where access to I-35, San Antonio, I-10 with its paths to Houston, New Orleans and beyond to Jacksonville, Florida is a temptation they can't ignore. Border agents, DEA agents and others are corrupted and many times because they want to live another day, so as we all know, the "war" on drugs is nothing but a lot of hot air, token busts, and was never designed to stop anything. There is simply far too much money to be made, and the U.S.' appetite for cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana is gargantuan. We as the consumers of these substances are just as culpable if we do use illicit drugs as the cartels, as they are only too happy to make tons of money and have huge international influence on whole governments while they're at it. The book itself is so well written and researched that it truly belongs in the pantheon of the greatest crime novels or historical crime books, like "The Godfather" for the thrilling story and suspense, and "Wiseguys" and "Casino" for accuracy and explaining just how vicious and just plain psycho cartel bosses and their underlings can be. That the Mexican government is up to its eyeballs in the drug trade is not news, but one can't help but maybe feel a bit of empathy for some in said government and law enforcement who are paid to play, or brutally murdered, and oftentimes forced to watch their families die first. It isn't much of a choice. Nonetheless, Winslow is a superb author, the two books gripping, and I can't wait to read his other novels. Be forewarned: "The Power of the Dog" and "The Cartel" are upsetting, depressing and disturbing. It's a story that needs to be told, however, and we must understand that as long as there is a demand for any kind of product or services, regardless of how dangerous or sinister, there will be a supply. It's a frustrating cycle that humanity bestowed upon itself.

Wow...that's all I can really say. I have not read a book this good, that I couldn't put down, that kept me up half the night in a long time. I was actually sad when it ended. This book starts near the end and then goes back to the beginning. And then it brings us forward slowly and surely, drawing the reader in with characters who just come alive in their wickedness and humanity. There is also a lot of commentary here on the never ending war on drugs, something I personally played a minor role in during the late 80s and early 90s when I was in the military. Mr. Winslow has clearly done his research because he really gets how things work and how these various agencies act and interact. But the real value here is the characters. A protagonist and an antagonist who are perhaps one and the same. They dance around for most of the book but you know the eventual showdown is coming and when it does, it is worth the wait.If you are put off by violence as part of the story line, or upset by graphic depiction of that violence, there are some parts of this book that might be objectionable. This also isn't light summer reading, some of it can be pretty dark, but if you're looking for a book that will draw you in emotionally and take you for a wild satisfying ride, this is the way to go.
