From the perspective of presenting a top-down, very contemporary, articulate, complete, and thoroughly well-produced book, this reference gives you a handy all-in-one guide to system administration on Oracle Solaris 11.1. All the major and important system administration activities and procedures, as well as some minor facts which might seem trivial at first, but are actually very important, are covered in a clear and cogent way. If you had to wade through the huge volume of documentation provided by Oracle that comes with the software ( or use your Google-Fu), just to find out the details of some small fact or technique, you would realize how powerful this book really is. It will make your life with Solaris easier, like it did mine.Just a few examples: there is a section on dealing with removable media such as USB devices, drives, thumb drives. There is excellent coverage of Secure Shell, how to start it up, manage it, etc.. Those are practical and contemporary subjects that a modern UNIX System Administration book must cover. Also, there is extensive coverage of how to add packages to your base system via the command line, which is a very critical, practical System Administration topic!A tremendous added benefit- ZFS is covered and explained completely and beautifully!Even if this book cost 3 times what Amazon is charging, you must have it.Robert M. KoretskyUNIX: The TextbookEdited 4/7/14- A big benefit of using Solaris 11.1 instead of OpenIndiana (May the Computer Gods forgive me for espousing a commercial system over a freeware system) is that the IPS GUI Package Manager on Solaris 11.1 has access to more packages that actually can be installed on your system. Even though the author recommends and heavily illustrates using a command line version of the IPS Package Manager, I found that with the default Gnome desktop GUI and IPS GUI, I could download and install Python 2.7.3 with Tkinter built into it from the Solaris repository in a couple of easy steps. Very similar to using the command line pkg package management system in PC-BSD or FreeBSD to get new packages from the FreeBSD Repository.Edited 10/15/14- I'm into virtualization now, and it seems the common shortcoming of documentation on zones (this book included) is that no one tells you how to log into the zone from the Internet using ssh, FTP, or telnet, or how to actually install an application in the zone! For example, what IP address do you use to ssh into a zone running on a Solaris 11.2 machine, from somewhere on your LAN or the Internet? And as far as installing an application, I don't mean a full web server stack, just some simple app that you don't trust and want to put in a zone to test. This book shows you how to create and administrate zones (it is an administration book after all), but not how to actually use them in some simple cases! After all, it does do that with zfs. I'm hoping that the authors' advanced book will do that. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/o11-092-s11-zones-intro-524494.html is a web page at Oracle that has an excellent intro to zones, and shows in a few easy steps how to add apache-22 to a zone! Bravo! And the Oracle web page also adds the zone to rpool on the vdev that Solaris boots from- Dr. Calkins in his zone intro creates a new zpool on another hard disk for the zone. I don't quite get the rational for that.

While classic UNIX seems to be fading in favor of Linux, if you still use Solaris (Solaris 11.x), this book fills in the gaps where the Oracle manuals (while usually ok), aren't quite as clear. The SMF, ZFS, and networking were of particular interest to me and this book hit those targets pretty well. I still have Sun servers that were put into production in 2003 that are still humming along and doing what they need to do. We also have newer Sun equipment (M-series and T-series) that beat the pants off of their x86 counterparts. Especially when it comes to VM's. You just can't beat the Oracle VM's (zones) using VMWare. But, it does take competent administration on any system to keep peace amongst the user community.So, to fill in the gaps, this book was a big help.

Overall, the book was good for a transition from Solaris 10 or even Solaris 9 to the next generation of Solaris operating systems. For getting a system up and running and becoming familiar with it, this book will suffice. My interests extended beyond the scope of this book. Although zones were covered, there is a slim chance that I will use them so I glossed over this section. Maybe that is someone else's interest. My interest was the image packaging system, which was covered well. Then my interests reached into building a network server: installadm commands, creating services, DHCP, and building clients by Automated Installation over a network. It took a great deal of time referring to Oracle website postings to find the right commands. Finally, disaster backup and recovery using USB devices and Automated Install was not mentioned. Every competent System Administrator needs that training. For these advanced topics, the typical reader will have to spend a lot of time searching the Internet for bits and pieces of help. In the next revision of Solaris 11, I recommend those topics be included in step-by-step commands. For what I need, I compiled my own step-by-step document to be my primary instruction guide and will use the book for performance monitoring commands and maybe network filing system setups. This author's previous Solaris 8, 9, and 10 Administration Guides were much better at covering these topics.

Much of what is included in this book can be found at the publicly available docs for Solaris from Oracle. There are some tips that Oracle's Solaris documentation do not cover. It is up to the reader to determine whether or not those tips are worth the cost of this book.

Initially I buy this book for about 100 pages of ZFS of Solaris 11.1. And I love the NFS chapter because it covers both ways of NFS shares in Solaris 11 GA and in Solaris 11.1. Then, I go though a whole book and figure out that this is the best book I can get for Solaris 11.1 system admin.I buy one copy for each member in the project team. My colleagues love it also.Strongly recommended! Hope the "advanced one" by the same author will publish soon.

Great reference book!

Overall a good book. The only issue I saw was in the ACLs section. For Solaris 11 it should have been the chmod commands and not setfacl sincethe file system is ZFS and uses NFSv4 styled ACLs.

Didn't apply much to my specific tasks.

This is a gimmick book--but a pleasant one at that. The front jacket matter includes the following comment that lays out the essence of this work: "Misconceptions, misunderstandings, and flawed facts finally get the heave-ho in this humorous, downright humiliating book of reeducation based on the phenomenal British best-seller." Or, as the author puts it (page xix): "This book is for the people who know they don't know very much. It contains hundreds of things that the average person doesn't know."Let's get to the book, then. One nice way of giving the reader a sense of what's involved is simply to note some of the questions and answers. Enough to give a taste, not enough to spoil reading the book."What speed does light travel at?" (Pages 56-57) It depends. In a vaccum, 186,282 miles per second. In 2000, a team at Harvard University managed to stop light, shining it into a bec (not clear what that is!) of the element rubidium. "Where do most tigers live?" (Pages 66-67) In the United States! These are captive animals. In the wild, numbers are dropping dramatically. "Where do camels come from?" (Pages 93-94) North America. Here's a new one for me (among others): "What Edison invention do English speakers use every day?" (Page 131-132) According to the book (and this is one on me), the word "Hello" was an Edisonian invention."What rhymes with orange?" (Pages 208-209) Orange is a dread word for poets. According to this volume, there are two words--Blorenge and Gorringe, both of which are proper nouns.So, there you are. A lot of fun. I don't pretend to know if all the answers to the questions posed are correct, but it's quite enjoyable to run through the questions and test your knowledge against the answers provided in the book.

Great read. This book is filled to the brim with interesting facts, each of which are self-contained and covered in 1-2 pages, which is the perfect length. It's quick enough to pick up and read for a few minutes at a time, but also long enough to give a fairly good explanation of the facts it's laying out.A lot of the book is spent challenging things most people accept as fact (do goldfish really have a 3 second memory? did Marie Antoinette really say "let them eat cake?" are you sure the Earth only has one moon?), or asking interesting questions with surprising answers (what color is water? what does the moon smell like?). If any of those examples I just listed interested you, then by all means give this book a whirl.

This is one amazing book. You don't want to put it down. As you read it, you wish there was someone standing nearby so you could share what you just read. I even had to pick up the phone and call my son to relate a section of the book right after reading. Forget what you know or think you know and open your eyes - you will start to question everything you think you know. You think you are well educated until this book throws into question what you know and goes about showing you why you are wrong. Myth buster. Buy it for yourself, buy it for friends, give it as a gift, or share your copy. Worth twice what it costs.

Given as a gift to an avid reader, keeper of facts big or small, obscure or broadly known, and self proclaimed junkie for "nickel knowledge" -the kind of stuff good for dinner parties and wowing grandchildren - who says this book as a gift was great fun and a perfect pick. (Whew!)

Bought for my 15 year old avid reader daughter. This was an Amazon suggestion after I bought my daughter the book “What If...” She loves it and has been reading excerpts from it since she unwrapped it.

Seemed to be a very interesting book. Filled with seldom know facts. Then the authors infuse their Catholic beliefs about Mary being a goddess and hokey myths trying to say the Bible is inaccurate. Throws a shadow of doubt as to the facts of all other chapters.

Fun read with some surprising revelations! What is nice...is this isn't the type of book you have to sit and read from front to back. I just sit for a few minutes...peruse a few pages, then I can pick it up at another time and restart anyplace in the book.

I learned a lot of interesting facts about things that I thought I already knew. This book also destroyed many beliefs held since childhood. Who knew that Rudolf the Red Nosed Deindeer was really a female? Many more myths like that are investigated and explained in this fascinating book.

Very well-documented and factual. Interest level is very consistent throughout, and for such diverse topic material, that is a big accomplishment. It it only had an index, this book could become a very useful and entertaining reference work as well.

I've read Brene Brown and she has much wisdom. But after I read her, I was craving a solid integration of Scripture and theology with psychology and neuroscience on the subject of shame. Curt Thompson does that for me, and more. I finished reading The Soul of Shame this morning and immediately ordered 20 copies to give, sell, and loan at our church. Enough said. Curt personifies shame as lurking, lying, whispering, manipulating, hiding, doing its dastardly work to undermine the Holy Spirit. But there is hope for healing. My favorite chapter is 8, where the foundational principles apply to our primary biological and spiritual relationships. In Curt's words, "The process of being known in the context of our vulnerability within the church becomes one of the most powerful means of evangelism and healing." The book is not one to skim. Take your time to read it ponder it. I'll be gathering some fellow pastors to explore it together, as we did with his first book.

I cannot recommend The Soul of Shame highly enough. The author takes complex neuroscience, scripture and psychology and blends them together in an easy to understand narrative. His insights into shame brought new meanings to the Genesis story of Adam and Eve that make sense to us today in ways that I had not considered. It seems that, since shame is so pervasive and deeply embedded within us that we take it as something that is normal and simply to be tolerated, or even enhanced. It is not, but he also offers the cure! We can change our stories and drain away the toxicity of shame-based beliefs and behaviors.

Curt Thompson's book, The Soul of Shame, helps readers reflect theologically on the unspoken topic that is in the air we breathe: shame. Thompson deals with shame on the personal level but also understands how it can affect structures and institutions. He posits that shame is the greatest tool of evil in the world to bring disintegration to self and disruption to relationships. Shame, according to Thompson, keeps us locked up emotionally, fuels addiction, alienates us from God and keeps us from being our best self. The pervasiveness of shame makes it hard to escape. We grow with shame from early childhood and have it constantly reinforced as we mature. Thompson's antidote to shame is vulnerability within community.The book is worthy of careful study. Insightful study questions at the end of the book would make for good material for a reading group to discuss. Thompson only really gets technical with the neuroscience in one chapter, so if you may be wary of an overly academic treatment, have no fear. The book is clear and understandable and though I am not with Thompson in all of his conclusions, I highly recommend the book as real food for thought.

If you've read Brene, you know that everything she write or says is worthwhile. Add to her work some brain research and the backdrop of the Story of Scripture, and you get The Soul of Shame. Well written, insightful, Biblical, and practical, Curt Thompson has given us a book that any group would benefit from. Potentially transformative stuff (if practiced!).

I have read 'Anatomy of the Soul' and was drawn to read this book too. The great, simple but detailed 'scientifically' explained way of how shame works in our brain and mind it's so helpful.Having read and studied extensively biblical and psychological commentaries on shame, this one in his scientific approach has added understanding of the newest scientific research on shame.The Biblical parts are pretty good as well, even if not really 'new' to me.I have followed the work of Dr. Dan Siegel and all of it is amazing as well.Good book for people who want not only some Biblical point of view on shame but for the connection of biblical and scientific is a good read.

Great book on the subject of personal shame. Written by a Christian psychiatrist who blends the right about of scientific medical information and spiritual information. Not preachy, but also does not shy away from the discussing the influence of unseen spiritual forces that accuse and condemn, and these forces impact shame. I normally don't read books more than once, but I've already read it twice and continue to think about what was written.

This book is written by a very good licensed psychiatrist. The author, an MD, is also a Chrisrian and does integrate some biblical principles; however, the book is largely based upon real people with real problems. I would assume that some of his patients are Christians and some are not. My assumption is based on my close reading of a very compelling and captivating account of those people and their problems. He also discusses some of the results, which he writes have been very positive. His book mentions patients ranging in age from very young to mature adults. The patients he describes come from all aspects of life like parents, children, corporate executives, and others. His book is very capitivating and I self-identified with it from the very first page. He does include solutions for helping the reader. Easy things that anyone can do. I highly recommend this book for anyone and everyone--regardless of any problem you may have or may not have. I am an older man who owns the kindle version and am presently seeing a licensed counselor for anxiety. My counselor and this book that she recommended is helping me to put serious anxiety out of my life. I do not know the author of this book nor am I writing it on his or anyone connected with him or anyone else as an "advertisement." I am simply writing it because it has helped me very much and may be able to help you or someone you know.

So I am a professional real estate investor and got this book as a gift from a friend. I put it aside for a while and finally picked it up and read it and I am so glad I did. Not only is this an amazing personal story of perseverance and persistence in the face of many adversities (private as much as professional) but it's also a book filled with lessons and even investing techniques and creative ways to structure a deal that I hadn't even heard about. There are many parts of this boon that stand out- the different deals and how Mitch structured them are highly educational- the personal story is highly motivational- the most theoryActually my favorite part of the book is the Moat theory of building your financial castle and moat and make yourself financially untouchable and secure as one of the prime goals in your financial plans. This is something that I have already shared with a lot of people and this concept alone has changed people's lives. Literally. Read the book just for that part even if you are not interested in real estate.And last but not least what shines through again and again is that the only way to long term success is doing business the honest way.Thanks Mitch for an awesome book.I learned a ton.

I'm 3/4 through the book but can say that first, I am impressed with Mr. Stephen's work ethic - a great American example. AAMOF, he viewed his early struggles as though he was an immigrant, which kept him going through adversity, just like the thousands of early immigrants did - worked hard, didn't complain, didn't depend on government help and eventually rose in income level and success. Second, his creative approach and always being open to new tactics is impressive. Third, his willingness to listen to others with more experience to help build his knowledge base is spot on. When he had little or no knowledge of a certain facet of real estate acquisition, funding, property evaluation, he sought out experts, learned and succeeded. A great personal success story, based on persistence, hard work and learning from others. NOT a book about get rich quick in real estate like the seminars and DVD's promoted constantly

I read this book and then read it again. Then, I bought his course and began actually putting the concepts into motion. His website has over 100 hours of materials on it. I plow through more of it every single day and still have a lot to go. Not a day goes by that I don't learn several things. Mitch Stephen isn't a big "guru" like so many others out there. He's actually a real, live person who truly cares how the program is working for you and wants to see you succeed. If you demonstrated that you are driven to succeed and willing to put in the hours, you aren't just another entry on his bank statement, you are a success in the making. One of the guys on our weekly Q&A calls has almost 30 houses under his belt and he started less than a year ago. At last count, Mitch has done over 1,300 houses and is still doing it every day. He is honest, very well-versed, down-to-earth, and never contradicts himself with his guidance.I had an "issue" yesterday and sent him an email for guidance. Ten minutes later, I had a ten paragraph email with a half-dozen ways to fix my problem. Then, he called me to follow up! I started putting the wheels in to motion and things are definitely looking up because of it. If you are unwilling or unable to put in the work and take guidance, this may not be for you but if you are actually looking for sincere guidance because you want to finally put down the books and become a doer, you need to read this book and plug in. I can't begin to say how happy I am that I bought this book. My career path just took a direction I wasn't expecting.....

My goodness! I've read many books- mostly for entertainment, but lately have been reading more non-fiction for insight to assist me in my own endeavors. Why would someone do this? For the same reason no one accepts dieting advice from a fat person. We tend to emulate those that are successful in hope of replicating their success.In this, Mitch does a great job of explaining how one who seemingly was a failure in life was able to become successful by finding their niche, and then perservering until success had been realized. From this perspective, this is a very inspirational story which is very raw and sometimes brutally honest in its approach. Not all success comes without sacrifice. Not all wins come without first losing.This is a great book into the mindset of an entrepreneur and the steps he used to become more than he was. The vehicle used to accomplish this is real estate, so to an extent, those seeking success in this field will read looking for insight along with tips and tricks to assist them. I do invest in real estate, and to a large degree, this was why I purchased the book. However, my expectations were modified throughout the reading.Slowly with each page turned, I began to feel an affinity for Mitch Stephen as a person rather than what I was reading about. As this is his first book, it is not as refined and polished as many others. This is an advantage in that a more trustworthy source becomes apparent. This is not a guru who is out to fleece readers of their money in search of more dollars. Why should he? He's already attained what others would consider an enviable level of success, so doesn't need.Instead, this is a human story of one man's struggles to become successful in providing for his family while fighting perceptions of those around him that what he is doing is not worthwhile, nor a good use of time. In other words, while fighting feelings experienced by every entrepreneur to date as people tend to criticize rather than encourage for whatever reason by human nature. Think about this- how often do we critique rather than praise?Upon finishing this book, I personally purchased his next book, as I did want more information on creative real estate. Between the two, I feel there is a wealth of information. However, like anything in life, unless that information is acted upon and used, then it will be pointless. For this book, if one wishes to find insight into real estate it is useful. If one wants a human story it is useful. If one wants a step by step guide as to what to do to become successful overnight without any effort- well, there are many other authors promising exactly that.
