Aaron T. Beck, MD, is the founder of cognitive therapy, University Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, and President Emeritus of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Dr. Beck is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award, the American Psychological Association (APA) Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Psychiatric Association Distinguished Service Award, the Robert J. and Claire Pasarow Foundation Award for Research in Neuropsychiatry, and the Institute of Medicine's Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health and Gustav O. Lienhard Award. Dr. Beck has worked extensively with personality disorders and has been an investigator on two studies using cognitive therapy with borderline personality disorder. Denise D. Davis, PhD, is Associate Professor of the Practice of Psychology at Vanderbilt University, where she is Associate Director of Graduate Training in Clinical Science. I tend to be drawn to relational theories (psychodynamic), such as Object Relations (OR) and Interpersonal, as a conceptual framework. Yet I practice from a technically integrated approach, drawing variously from all major orientations depending on the client's personality and Stage of Change (Prochaska, 1984, Systems of Psychotherapy: A Transtheoretical Analysis). While relational theories imply cognitive interventions, I felt I ought to read Beck's Cognitive theory of personality as its the seminal work of the cognitive-guru and I try to practice a well-rounded therapy.I personally thought that Beck's approach to Cognitive Therapy (CT) for personality disorders goes back to his psychodynamic roots, having much similarity to OR theory. However, I think Beck's theory is quite distinct from OR theory. While its easy to compare the therapeutic approach between CT and OR, I think the more interesting discussion is the possible integration of theory.There is a wide belief that all psychological functions perpetuate personality disorder, thus therapy must take an integrated approach, intervening on all those functions at the same time. Beck describes this as a cognitive-interpersonal cycle were beliefs lead to interpersonal behavior that reinforce the beliefs. However, Beck's approach to Axis I disorders would challenge the belief and ask the client to behavior differently in interpersonal interactions to either find evidence of their belief or to develop a new belief / change their schema. This would separate the cognitive/intellectual intervention from the behavior and emotional reaction. In order to intervene on all the psychological functions at once, the interpersonal interaction must occur in therapy. The therapist must explore the therapeutic relationship with the client, the cognitions and emotions that shape the client's interpersonal behavior, and the therapist's reaction. This also must be associated with ongoing interpersonal relationships outside of therapy and past events in the clients life. This is quire similar to a transference analysis and interpretation in OR or other psychodynamic therapy (Davanloo's interpersonal triangle between therapy, current relationships outside therapy and past events; Kernberg's Transference-Focused Therapy). Thus Beck's CT approach to personality bears some resemblance to his psychodynamic roots.However, Beck's theory of personality differs from OR theory. Both theories would conceptualize the cognitive processes and belief systems similarly, as well as the interpersonal patterns. Yet Beck believes schemas are at the pith of personality while OR theory believes there are several split-off ego states. Ego states could include a rational, adaptive ego; regressive ego-states fixated via childhood trauma; & ego-states shaped by interactions with key developmental figures such as parents, as well as society in general. Healthy personality is a gestalt or whole of past experiences, yet even healthy individuals can recognize ambivalence between 'parts of their self.' For example, we all say "part of me wants to... while the other part of me feels like I should." This is the parental or societal ego-state battling our wants, wishes or desires. In personality pathology, these ego-states lack integration and are often dichotomize or polarized. Some personalities oscillate between polarized ego states, others remain fixed at one extreme. Oscillation is most evident in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Such an individual might flip rapidly from a regressive child-ego state to a parental-ego state. Their posture will go from slouched or even fetal to authoritarian, their inflection from child-like to parental, their emotional state from regressive to intellectualized, their defense mechanisms from primitive to rationalized, their sense of identity is completely shifted, emotional reactions polarized and labile, resulting in extremes in behavior and unstable relationships. An individual with paranoid personality has a belief that the world and people are malevolent because they have been victimized in the past, thus they enter social interactions in a defensive child-ego state. However, defensive posture is a passive, avoidant position to an underlying aggression. When other people notice this defensive posture / ego-state they too become defensive to protect themselves in case the passive aggression becomes active. When the individual with paranoid personality disorder sees others take on the defensive posture, they switch from a passive, defensive child-ego state to the complimentary ego-state that identifies with the aggressor that victimized them in the past. When the paranoid individual sees the world as aggressive, they are projecting the internalize image of the aggressor onto others. When others respond defensively, they are taking on, or identifying with this role - projective identification. The paranoid individuals follows suite by also identifying with the role of the aggressive and switching ego states: their posture will go from slouched, fetal and defensive to open-shouldered and offensive, their inflection will go from victimized to aggressive, their emotional reaction will go from regressive self-pity to a callous lack of empathy tied to rationalization defense mechanisms. Beck's cognitive schemas, at least in this book, cannot describe these radical shifts in identity, ego-states or 'ways of being' that or quite easily observable in personality pathology. However, OR theory rejects constraining and circumscribed approaches to conceptualizing personality, such as Freud's 'mental apparatus' model of personality. They want to purely conceptualize each client, which can be difficult and tiresome. I believe Beck's schema's can offer a medium that composes the 'stuff' of ego-states, thereby offering a way for OR theorists to conceptualize personality in a more organized manner. Additionally, this integration of the two theory's can explain how schemas can result in immense shifts in personality, identity and ways of being that Beck's theory otherwise cannot explain. Schemas consist of cognitive concepts or nodes that are related to each other to varying degrees (a psychological correlation between concepts). When a set of concepts are highly enough correlated, they create a schema: the physical parts of a dog are related to form a dog-schema. However, concepts are related between various schemas as well: dogs and cats both have wet noses, thus feeling a wet nose sniff your leg ought to equally elicit schemas of cats and dogs for a person who is equally familiar with both animals. Any event will be associated with a handful of cognitive concepts which will 'active' a handful of schemas that shape how we cognitively and emotionally process that event and behave in reaction to that event. In an individual who lacks ego integrity - whose personality consists of multiple split-off ego states - the even will active clusters of schemas associated with various ego states. For example, going back to the individual with paranoid personality disorder, the event of a social interaction elicits a belief that the world and people are malevolent, activating two clusters of schemas. The first cluster constitutes the defensive child-ego-state of the paranoid individual who sees the social interaction through the same lens that they saw the world after being victimized as a child: they regress to that period of their life. The second cluster of schemas constitute the aggressor-ego state, which is latent until the individual sees evidence in the social interaction that seems to provide proof their their belief is true: the the world and people are malevolent. These schemas that constitute the aggressor state include the physical posture (threatening), emotional capacity (or paucity of empathy), and behaviors (aggression) of the aggressor. In this way, ego-states organize a vast, unorganized sea of schemas into 'ways of being' in the world, and schemas define and conceptualize the contents of various ego states. Defining the contents of ego-states is vital to helping the client recognize their ego-states and associate them with their past trauma. This allows therapy to begin working through past trauma. If the client can recognize components (schemas, cognitive processes, etc) of an unhealthy ego-state, they can attempt new, healthier ways of being and begin defining the strong, adaptive components of their self as differentiated from those unhealthy states. Often these clients have the experience of 'being along for the ride:' their health, adaptive self is completely out of control to unhealthy-ego states. This is what Beck would call valence of schemas & dynamic psychology would call cathexis. Defining unhealthy vs adaptive ego states shifts cathexis to adaptive ego states. This process compartmentalizes maladaptive ego-states, yet once the client works through the unresolved emotions, the components, or schemas, of those ego states can be integrated with the adaptive, strong ego into a gestalt, whole, or healthy, integrated personality. A huge range of interventions, particularly experiential, can help with this but is outside of the point of this review.In other words, an integration between psychodynamic (particularly OR) and CT theory offers a much more helpful conceptual framework their either by themselves.

Nice overview of each disorder from a Cognitive perspective. I used it primarily for a lecture on narcissism but will incorporate information on other disorders for other lectures. I found the chapter on NPD clearly written and with some fine suggestions regarding treatment from a Cognitive Therapy point of view,

I purchased this book in Kindle format from Amazon. After reading two biographies, I thought it was time for some light reading. Since I try to read the books from Amazon that I actually pay for first, and this one was at the top of my Kindle reader, I started reading it. At first, there seemed to be something off with the writing, but the author got better as the book went on. The characters were fairly well written and fleshed out and Abigail, the cat familiar, added the snark that actually made the book very entertaining. I'd be very interested in a series going back three hundred years to find out how and why Abigail was punished to be a familiar for five hundred years.I wasn't sure about the back door being on the border between the magic world and the human world cause I could see some type of trouble beginning...but that takes place in the second book. :)If you like cozy mysteries with witches and magic, then you will like or love this book/series. I enjoyed it so much that as soon as I finished this one, I bought the next one and began reading it immediately.

Excellent beginning to a new series. Loved the premise of a witch in a mortal town. Her snarky familiar is funny and I like how they interact. Police officer live interest is a fun idea but I’m not sure it was accurate with her involvement with his case. But small towns are very different from large cities. Can’t wait for the next book. Already preordered it

Two very different small towns share the same book store. How is this possible? The towns are situated on a portal between the mortal and mystical worlds. The mortal side of Back Room books is run by Monica Montoya, who is a witch born without powers. She is also new to the mortal world. When a murder occurs, Monica steps in to help her friendly, neighborhood police officer with the case and finds it difficult to keep her two worlds separate.

urban-fantasy, witches, murder, magicIt looks like a great book for those with the right imagination. I got lost when it turned out that while she had no witchly abilities, she also was unfortunately unfamiliar with mortals and their obliviousness to the magic around them. I usually have an easier time relating to the main character.

I liked this first book a lot. Monica and Mona are fun siblings to know. This is nice for me because I have a twin sister myself. I love the premise and I hope that there will be many more stories with Monica, Mona and Abigail. Good job.

Funny book. Have read other books by Susan Harper. An inept witch takes over running the bookstore her witchy aunt had owned. Lots to adapt to human world with a snarky familiar black cat.

This is a pretty good series. I'm not much into witches but the stories are very entertaining. I have just finished the third book in the series and immediately ordered the next one. I recommend this series.

Had a little difficulty with the beginning but soon was captivated ... it's full magic, love, friendship, and thrilling moments ! Just can't wait to start the next book in this serie !

I saw the film some years ago and like it very much, so downloaded this version. I found the book difficult to follow, choppy and loaded with unfamiliar aboriginal language. The last complaint was mitigated by finding, at the end of the volume, a relatively complete glossary. A little upfront notice would have helped. The book is written by a descendant of the original participants, perhaps explaining the obvious gaps in the narrative, but the perspective is that of the participants rather than of a historical rendition. A little more background on the status of the aboriginal people at the relevant time would have been useful, especially to non-Australians like me. All of those gripes having been aired, let me add that there is much to admire in the courage, resourcefulness and bushcraft knowledge of the key participants. I am sure that very few outsiders could have survived such a journey, let alone doing so with apparent matter-of-fact aplomb. This is my first book from a native Australian author. I will be looking for more voices of such a unique experience of life in such an outwardly inhospitable environment.

This is the true story of three young Aboriginal girls who were taken from their families and put in a Native Settlement in Australia. The reason they were taken was because they were "half caste" (their fathers were white), and they were being forced to be "made white". They were 100s of miles away from their families, but they decided to escape. The knew there was a rabbit proof fence that would lead them back home, and if they found that, they would get back to their parents.This book was very poorly written. It was unorganized and confusing and I had a very hard time getting into it. It took half of the 160 pages to even get to the story of the girls, and then it raced through their escape and return home. The book was so jumbled that I was sure it was written by a child. There is no plot development, no character development.....it was just a jumbled mess. The author switched back and forth between using Aboriginal words and English words, but never really takes the time to explain what the Aboriginal words meant. She wrote it as if all readers would know what she was talking about.Just poor. Don't bother.

It's a must read. If we don't inform ourselves about the horrors of the past, we may very well be destined to repeat it. Read it, and pass the information on to the young ones around you.

This is the story of three Aboriginal half caste girls removed from their families in Western Australia by government officials who sent them 1000 miles away to a 'residential school', more like a prison than a boarding school, where they were incarcerated and expected to learn to read and write and speak English before being sent off to be servants. The author, Doris Pilkington (Aboriginal name Nugi Garimara)is the daughter of the eldest girl, Molly and she retells their story in simple, straightforward language.Molly and the two younger girls, sisters Daisy and Gracie run away from the school within days of arriving with only the clothes on their backs and no provisions. They amazingly manage to survive using their native skills in hunting and finding clean water and later strangers who give them food and clothing. Somehow, partly due to the rain and partly to their skills at hiding they manage to evade the police and the trackers sent to find them. Molly is familiar with the rabbit proof fence that runs the length of the state and knows if she can find that then they will just need to follow it home.Although told simply, this incredible story of tenacity and survival is powerful in portraying the devastation of white settlement on Australia's Aboriginal communities, first by depriving them of their land and the ability to feed themselves and then by allowing a paternalistic government to deprive them of their mixed race children.

I first saw the Miramax movie starring Kenneth Branagh, which was based upon this book. I was intrigued enough by the film to read this book. I was not disappointed. This book is certainly a testament to the human spirit. It also reveals the harsh, paternalistic and racist policies that the Australian government imposed upon its Aboriginal population.In 1931, the Australian government issued an edict that mandated that all Aboriginal and part Aboriginal children were to be forcibly removed from their homes and taken to special settlements where they were to be assimilated. There, while living in inhumane and degrading conditions, they would be taught to be culturally white, would be mandated to speak English only, and would be trained to be domestic help or laborers in white households.The author tells the reader the story of three young girls, Mollie, Gracie, and Daisy, who had Aboriginal mothers and White fathers. Ranging in age from nine to fifteen years old, the three girls were forcibly removed from their loving families and taken to a special settlement. The girls rebelled against this system, and, homesick, escaped from such a settlement. They left with iterally just the clothes on their back. Their only guide home would be a rabbit-proof fence that stretched for over a thousand miles across Australia.The girls Aboriginal heritage and survival skills would come in handy throughout their nearly nine week long trek across Australia, as they were forced to subsist on the land and the occasional kindness from strangers. They had to endure thirst, hunger, and danger, while avoiding being caught along the way by professional trackers, police on the lookout for them, and white settlers that were unsympathetic to their situation.This story is a most personal one for the author, as one of the girls, Molly, is the author's mother. Told in a straightforward, factual manner, it is an incredible story that is an indictment of the Australian government's racist policies against its Aboriginal people and its imperialistic self-proclaimed superiority over them.

This isn't the very best Harry Potter guide I've read, but it's pretty good. No two guidebooks feature the same insights or editorial slant. If you're collecting a lot of Potter-ish material, this is a fine addition to your collection. If you can only buy one book like this for your personal library, browse other books like this one. Check the "look inside." Some are better than others.This book isn't bad. It's just not quite as authoritative as some competing books. I don't regret buying it, but -- for my research (as a writer) -- it wasn't a keeper.

I am currently taking a literature course on Harry Potter, it is part of a children's literature minor that I am going for. This book was not required, but I got it in case it was a good supplement - and it is! This book explores roots behind names in their language. It also discusses what the "real" equivalent means to us. For example, how we view dragons (if they were real) versus how they are viewed in the magical world of J.K. Rowling.An excellent, easy read, quick guide to some of the big mythologies and legends that go into the series - just in case you don't really know much about them!

This book has an interesting foundation for becoming a great book, I just don't think the author elaborated enough on each subject. Also, I already knew a lot of the things in the book, before i read it. I was disappointed, because I had expected a more advanced book. The book could be written for children under the age of 10 according to my opinion.

It is much more for people who have interest in origins of things or history than it is for true Harry Potter Fans. I did fing it kinda interesting but I was looking for things about Harry Potter and not about history or origins of names. But would be good for a homeschool writing class or something to teach how to take real events and change them into a fiction story.

From the title and chapter headings, I thought this book would explore the myth and meaning behind Harry Potter somewhere around the level of "Goddesses in Every Woman" or "Hero with a Thousand Faces." I am really disappointing that the level of analysis is closer to "An Idiot's Guide to the Harry Potter Universe." Don't buy this book unless you want a regurgitation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, one of JKRs books for the Comic Relief charity. Harry Potter Schoolbooks Box Set: From the Library of Hogwarts: Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Quidditch Through The Ages

OK Well I found this to be a really good book that helps explain so many things but in the Witches and Wizards Through the ages section they forgot a few people like Sirius Black. There were a couple others but I can't remember right this moment who else. I'd like to know why they'd forget Sirius BLack when then can remember a useless git like stan shumpyke. Sirius is one of the more important charactors even after J.K. Rowling killed him off at end of book 5. Cried for days after that.

This book was purchased for a Christian class the family was taking and we enjoyed the parts used in the class so much that my husband and I have finished reading it. We raised three boys and this book (along with the bible) gives insights as to how boys should be taught so they will become the young men they need to be...yes, even in this day and age!!!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Rick Johnson is the founder of Better Dads, a fathering skills program designed to equip men to be more engaged in the lives of their children and he writes from the experience of a less-than-adequate father turned "super dad" following his conversion to Christ. Johnson shares his own failings, fears and weaknesses as a challenge to other dads to encourage them that they, too, can and should be more diligent about their fathering. The book is full of practical advice mixed with godly wisdom and would make a great gift to any father young or old, especially for that dad who feels overwhelmed or under-equipped for the task of spiritually leading his family.Johnson addresses pretty much all areas of concern for a man. He deals with the importance of fathers bonding with their children, especially the need for an older man to bond with a younger man - he argues that true manhood is something that is caught by being in the presence of men, not something that a woman can teach and definitely not something that the culture is promoting or endorsing. Johnson also deals with the issues of sex and the important role that the father plays in this issue as well as discipline. Johnson is seeking to help fathers produce men of honor...not simply successful by the world's standards, but successful by God's standard - men who live by a code of honor that is greater than themselves and are willing to pay the price necessary to achieve "greatness." Personally, I believe that being a parent is one of the most important jobs on Earth. Seems rather obvious to me, but it's amazing how many people think that just because you can physically father a child, it qualifies you to be a Real father. We study for new jobs, we study for the SAT's, we even study the manual on how to hook up our new surround sound, but doesn't raising a child with good character affect eternity in a much stronger sense? Since my ex wouldn't read it, I did (I'm the mom). I enjoyed it so much I purchased the mother's version, "That's My Son." My son is only 18 months right now, but I'm of the opinion that a little effort now will save me much headache and heartache in the future. Even if you are not a 'reader,' please make the effort.

I only wish I would've picked this one up sooner. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE who is about to become a father whether you are Christian or not. I can say that even though I didn't really consider myself a religious person prior to reading this book the teachings in this book will really force you to reflect on certain areas of your life.. And may even guide you to reconsider another look at your faith in order for you to become the best man you can be for your son.

So I’m a single mom and I bought this book because I’m a mother of boys. And I know that as a woman I have some big shoes to fill as a mother. But my boys father left us when they were young and now I have even bigger shoes to fill trying to be a father. And trust me the struggle is real. I’m hoping this book can help me understand the values I need to help them learn to be better men. So far I’m only a few chapters in and I love it.

I have to commend Rick Johnson for writing a parenting book that is not filled with narrowly structured answers to complex issues. It seems as though he merely sought to roughly outline the obstacles encountered in Father/Son relationships and inspire the mind and heart of the men to engage the topics. If you're the wife of a Christian man and you have a son, don't hesitate to pick this book up for him.
