FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE & HAZELNUT FALLEN CAKE   ½ cup (4 oz/125 g) unsalted butter, cut into cubes, plus more for greasing ¾ cup (6 oz/185 g) granulated sugar, plus more for dusting 10 oz (315 g) semisweet chocolate, chopped 2 tablespoons canola oil 4 large eggs, separated, plus 2 large eggs 2 tablespoons Frangelico 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 teaspoon kosher salt ¾ cup (2¾ oz/75 g) finely ground hazelnuts 1 recipe Frangelico Whipped Cream (page 91) Chopped toasted hazelnuts, for garnish Shaved chocolate, for garnish Serves 8–10   Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9-inch (23-cm) springform pan, line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper, then grease the parchment. Dust with granulated sugar, then tap out any excess.   Combine the butter, chocolate, and oil in a large heatproof bowl and set over but not touching barely simmering water in a saucepan. Heat, stirring occasionally, until melted and smooth, about 4 minutes. Remove the bowl from the heat.   In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat the egg whites on medium-high speed until frothy, about 1 minute. Add ½ cup (4 oz/125 g) of the granulated sugar and beat until stiff peaks form, about 3 minutes. Set aside.   In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, eggs, Frangelico, the remaining ¼ cup (2 oz/60 g) granulated sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt until smooth. Add the egg yolk mixture to the chocolate mixture and whisk until incorporated, about 1 minute. Fold one-fourth of the egg whites and all of the ground hazelnuts into the chocolate mixture, then gently fold in the remaining egg whites until uniformly combined.   Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake until the cake has risen above the rim of the pan and is set on top, 35–40 minutes. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cool completely. The cake will fall slightly and crack on top as it cools.   Make the Frangelico whipped cream: Remove the outer ring of the pan. Mound the whipped cream in the center of the cake and garnish with chopped hazelnuts and shaved chocolate.  CLASSIC WHIPPED CREAM 1 cup (250 ml) heavy cream ¼ cup (2 oz/60 g) granulated sugar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract VARIATION | To make Frangelico Whipped Cream, add 2 tablespoons Frangelico in place of the vanilla extract.   Makes about 2 cups (310 g)   In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat together the mascarpone, cream, and vanilla on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form, about 3 minutes. Use right away, or cover and refrigerate for up to 2 hours.

Really a nice cake baking book. Have made about 7 different cakes using this book already. Some recipes were more difficult in the execution than I expected but all tasted great.

Seems to be missing steps and important information. Was greatly disappointed.

I bought this for my 13-year-old sister-in-law for Christmas. She loved it! She made her first cake from the book the same week. The book included a wide variety of cake recipes that were beautifully decorated. I would definitely recommend it.

I’ve just received this book and I am thrilled with it! So many great recipes I want to try, simple and clear instructions, some fantastic basic recipes , beautiful photos, I am a fan!

I bought this book as a xmas present for my teenage (aspiring to be a master baker) daughter Lily. She really seemed to love the book especially the part where it showed the various tips for piping. It has lovely photographs and instructions that make it easier for a novice baker to learn. Would definitely recommend.

I've only made one cake from it yet (Angel Food Cake) and it was delicious! This little book has a lot of good looking cake recipes as well as tips, pictures of techniques and basic recipes.

Lovely book, makes me want to bake all the time. The pictures are gorgeous and the instructions are pretty easy to follow. I’ve done two recipes so far and they both came out amazing.

I bought this for my 12 year old niece. She loves the shoujo style, clamp-esque type anime art (so does auntie for that matter!) and she's just learning to draw and for 12 is showing a real talent for it, so I've been wanting to help and encourage it now while she's so young. As an artist myself, I've been teaching her and this book was wonderful for demonstrating the different emotions you can do with a face with minimal lines and strokes. Out of all the myriad of books I've bought for her (How to Draw Manga, Manga for Dummies, etc...) this so far has been her absolute favorite. I flipped through it and gave it a good look over before I gave it to her and as a tool and guide for beginners I give it 5 stars. It's small, it's convenient, and for kids/beginners handy as heck. The only disadvantage, because of it's size, unless you break the spine, it will not lay open for reference while someone is drawing. But that is minor and not worth losing a star over. I doubt a 12 year old will even notice that little detail, she loved it just as is. :)

My original thoughts on this book were that that it would be a handy reference guide to drawing expressions and moods. I was surprised at how short it was, and how little information or details there really are. It would make a nice coffee table book, or a quick reference guide if you wanted to draw exactly what they had in the book. It only contains female faces, from a front facing angle, and only has a few expressions typed under it. The printed text I did not find helpful, but the small portraits may be useful if you're stuck on how to express an emotion. There are no instructions or tips on how to create those looks, however.My copy is the Kindle version, and I am glad for that, as the price point is more in line with the quality and content of the book. It is incredibly short, and not very useful unless you just want some cute ideas to go on. One thing to note is that the Kindle Edition is best read on a tablet, or a device that allows for better zooming and full color. It does not display very well on the Kindle W/Keyboard or the Kindle Touch and loses some of its impact because the grays are very faint. Zooming in is necessary to really get the most out of the expressions.Who this book is best for: Anyone who wants a pocket guide for basic manga expressions, beginners wanting to see how emotions look on characters, those who want a book for inspiration on characters.

This is a very nice compilation of expressions. I bought it as a reference guide for quick comic expressions, it's just about perfect for that. If you're hoping to do the same, this book assumes the reader is already proficient in the fundamentals of character design and construction. The expressions are presented in full color by means of simple, clean head and upper torso illustrations. At first glance, the book seems to duplicate several expressions, but upon close examination, the body language differed, and the subtleties should become obvious. This could, I think, have been more clearly expressed if the similar illustrations were done full length body, but then, if you read manga astutely, or have consciously noted human body language, you should be able to extrapolate an appropriate pose from the head-and-torso examples within and all will be clear. For what it attempts to convey, (facial expressions of anime characters) it's unrivaled (as of 2/2012). It's extremely helpful to have all of the expressions one place, and, in addition to books like Facial Expressions: A Visual Reference for Artists, you'll have a very nice reference toolkit for tackling facial expressions for most any kind of character illustration you can think up. As a bonus, the book's illustrations are accompanied by relative verbal expressions in both Japanese (romanji), and English.Pros:Comprehensive straight-on and 3/4 view head-&-shoulders mange expressionsClean, concise layout, with well drawn contemporary styled characters (as of 2/2012)Includes brief verbal expressions, statements, questions and ripostes relevant to the accompanying illustrationsCons:A few of the emotions would have been more clearly defined accompanied by full-body thumbnailsThe book could be physically bigger - it's about 4.5" (13cm) squareBottom Line:If you're an artist interested in adding some emotions to your bag of tricks, pull the trigger, this book will easily pay for itself in time spent digging through comics looking for expression examples.

I don't think I need to state it but it's for reference. It's really really cute (and girly. only anime girls that are like 13 in here :l) and I like how it's pocket-sized,but I think 8.99 is expensive. There are expressions that look the same (but they are cute) and in my opinion the expressions look... sort of incorrect. There isn't a lot written in there, it teaches you Japanese but I'd rather learn it in a different way. Keep in mind that this is a gift book. It is pleasant though. I LOVE it but it is expensive. Also, the hairstyle, face, and clothing are sort of the same... The clothing is basically just scarves and something on top of something (It was ok), the faces are the same except for the emotions, and the hair are ALL short, goes the same way, has those little curved up hair on top except different colors. Even with the cons, I still LOVE it. I can't wait to get the 2nd one.Pros Super super cute Super super super cute Super cute drawings Beautiful+Cute colors+coloring and shadingCons Expensive Not much (at least not much for the price. It tells you about how many there are and the price but i expected a little more. some are like the same)

My son loves all things Carle and this was another one he adored! It is a super cute story about a chameleon who wants to be other animals but who in the end just wants to be himseld. Great for toddlers!! My 4 year old loves it. He even likes a show on one of the streaming channels that has all the books read and this is his favorite on the show.

My 4 year old loves this book. Checking each page to see which new mixed up body part the chameleon gains is so much fun. We've read it a couple dozen times already and he still laughs like crazy each time. His other favorites are 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and 'Mr. Seahorse'. The Mixed up Chameleon is very in line with the other 2 but a little bit more of story than 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'.

Each year, our daycare devotes a week (each) to two authors: Dr. Seuss and Eric Carle. I am always looking for books to add to my Eric Carle collection and found The Mixed Up Chameleon. The children in my class (3yo's.) LOVED this book. At first, they laughed at all the crazy, mixed up creatures the chameleon became. Then, somehow, they saw the message of the book. They would clap when he became himself again. Pretty neat for 3 year olds! This is a lovely story and I highly recommend it.

Good colorful book, but we didn't enjoy it as much as some of his others. Iwould suggest going to the library to look at it if you are interested then youwill know if it will appeal to your kids.

This is a beautiful book. The writing and artwork make it perfect for young kids. I even notice myself waiting to turn the page just to look at the pictures longer. My daughter enjoys it but its not one of our Go-To books. (Personal preference)

The theme of the story is awesome! I love the tabs to flip through the book, turning the page quickly for a 1-2 year old is vital to holding attention span.

This dictionary fell far short of my expectations. It is short of a lot of words. I lived in Kenya for many years, so I know many words in Swahili. For example, I wanted to look up the word "halafu" which means 'then' I would think it is a very necessary word for a dictionary to contain, particularly since it has so many uses. Well there was not hide nor hair of halafu instead, in the English-Swahili section I found 'Wakati huo" which is not exactly the same thing. This is a dictionary for rank beginners. SOooo I'm still looking for a good bilingual dictionary. This will do in a rush, but who's in a hurry?Bonita Evans, Ph.D.

this was a book i heard at many a bedtime of my childhood. it is a wonderful story and the illustrations are fantastic. the karuk tribe is native to the klamath river in california and so many of the characters are pnw species. i recently purchased this as a baby shower gift and i hope the new arrival will enjoy this story of fire and ecology the way i did.

I'm a school librarian with a background as a cultural anthropologist. My passion, besides environmentalism, has always been American Indians, and since I live in California, I wanted an easy picture book to read to my students to help them understand the wonderful and artistic stories of the people who inhabited the state before it was taken over by "white people." This book completely fills that bill. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to introduce children to different cultural perspectives. And it's a great story!

My mom used to tell me a similar story as this as a child. I was thrilled to find an illustrated version of the tale to gift to her as an adult.

I love this story and used it every year in my kindergarten classroom. Now that I am retired, I bought a copy for my granddaughters. Beautifully illustrated!!

There are a few versions of how coyote steals fire and this was well very written and filled with great illustrations.

Good tale. My grandson loved it.
