Great book on the importance of data-driven decision making. While I have always been someone that has let the data do the talking, I haven't found an easy way to explain why. Super Crunchers is that easy way! Below I have summarized some of the important points of the book....Super Crunching is crucially about the impact of statistical analysis on real-world decisions. Two core techniques for Super Crunching are the regression and randomization.1. Regression will make your predictions more accurate (Historical approach):It all starts with the use of regressions, and although this method is a basic statistical test of causal relationship it's still a very powerful tool that I need to re-introduce in my analytical life.Regressions make predictions and tell you how precise the prediction is. It tries to hone in on the causal impact of a variable on a dependent. It can tell us the weights to place upon various factors and simultaneously tell us how precisely it was able to estimate these weights.2. Randomization and large sample sizes (Present/Real-Time approach):Reliance on historical data increases the difficulty in discerning causation. Large randomized tests work because the distribution amongst the sample are increasingly identical. Think A/B testing on steroids that allows you to quickly test different combinations! Boils down to the averages of the "treated and untreated" groups.Government has embraced randomization as the best way to test what works. Statistical profiling led to smarter targeting of government supportWith finite amounts of data, we can only estimate a finite number of causal effects3. Neural networkUnlike the regression approach, which estimates the weights to apply to a single equation, the neural approach uses a system of equations represented by a series of interconnected switches.Computers use historical data to train the equation switches to come up with optimal weights. But while the neural technique can yield powerful predictions, it does a poorer job of telling you why it is working or how much confidence it has in its prediction.Super Crunching requires analysis of the results of repeated decisions. If you can't measure what you're trying to maximize, you're not going to be able to rely on data-driven decisions.We humans just overestimate our ability to make good decisions and we're skeptical that a formula that necessarily ignores innumerable pieces of information could do a better job than we could.

They have data on the size of our shoes, the foods we eat, the medicines we buy, the games we play and even the colors we favor. Once the data is collected, researchers use regression and statistical analysis to evaluate the effect of different variables on a commodity or a behavioral trend, e.g. does music in factories increase productivity? Would a salary raise improve employee loyalty…..? And so on.Putting This new data-analysis approach to many fields has made remarkable improvements. Consider the effect on the medical field. The rise of data-based decision making has reversed conventional wisdom. For example it showed that beta blockers can actually help cardiac patients and that estrogen therapy does not help aging women. Now there is a diagnostic program called “Isabel” which allows physicians to enter a patient’s symptoms into a computer and receive the most likely diagnosis. It will also tell the doctor the possible drug that caused the symptoms. Soon it will even specify the most likely therapy. No wonder many doctors are getting concerned about the possible loss of their control over diagnoses once considered a most important factor in their profession.How are we then to look at this groundbreaking approach to decision making? One cannot dispute its speed and efficiency. It is simply remarkable! Business has put it to beneficial use, but mostly to maximize its profits from the unaware consumers. I bought this textbook for my college class.It is a good textbook if you don't mind spending and extra $60 bucks to access the online content. On virtually every page they tell you several times to go to their website to access the online content for the book. A good portion of the print in the book is them telling you to access such and such online at their website, which you can only do if you purchase the access code. I can't believe that they have the gall to charge $100 bucks for a paperback book and expect you to spend $60 more to access the textbook's online content.I will be complaining to my professor about the deceptiveness of this textbook company.

Bill Jelen and Michael Alexander use real world examples and step by step walkthroughs to explain every feature and trick of Excel 2010's pivot table arsenal. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because the downloadable files didn't always jive with the text, and because I would've liked to see more hands-on activities within each chapter.Regarding the downloadable files, they tend to match the "after" figures in the text, and not the "before" figures. So, if you'd like to follow along with the steps in the book, you often need to undo a bunch of organization and calculation steps. Chapter 3 is a good example: the tables where you are guided through modifying the table style already have a custom theme applied. For future volumes, I'd suggest the authors prepare two sets of worksheets for each chapter. One set for readers to modify and another set showing the final product.I also would've liked twice as many case studies in the first 3 or 4 chapters. For me, practice is the best contributor to retention.Having pointed out those two shortcomings, I feel compelled to restate how absurdly wonderful the written explanations in the book are. I've been using a "New Perspectives" textbook for the past year to learn Excel. It's brief pivot table chapter left me confused. After diving into Pivot Table Data Crunching this past weekend, I now feel confident that I have a handle on the topic and can translate that knowledge into real-world time savings at work.

After having a very bad experience with another seller for a book I so badly needed I was sceptical about reordering the same book. But I thought about it and gave it another try and I am so happy that I did. The book was EXACTLY in the condition that the seller stated and is worth every penny I spent. I am very happy with what I ordered and will return to order in the future. I recommended this seller to the students new and returning at my school and in the front office. Thank you again Amazon.com for having reliable sources for students and the like!

This book is not worth the money after about chapter 3. It is hard to follow and none of the examples in the book match up the examples that you are able to download from the website. I dont recommend this book at all. I even emailed the author asking him if there was an updated file I was missing or something and received no response. I dont understand how there are so many good reviews for this book

I'm an experienced user of Office suites including 2010, but needed an updated "Intro" class to complete an AAS. This book would be my choice, were I training others in use of Office 2010. Get the spiral bound version - it'll lay flat, and even permit rolling passed pages to the back of current text, important if your school's workstations are like mine, with about as much space for your book and notepad as an economy-class airline seat's seat-back tray. The companion website was perfectly synchronized with the exercises at the ends of all chapters.

Even in it present form, it is very useful and recommended for anyone wanting to become proficient at using pivot tables and making mince meat of inordinately large data sets.Bill Jelen's book will serve an excellent map into the world of Pivot Tables.Those unfamiliar with Pivot Tables will find this book an efficient and effective teaching tool to gain significant proficiency very quickly.Become proficient with Pivot Tables and soon you will wonder how did you ever got along without them.

I received this book two days ago, and am about half way through. I had NO experience with pivot tables this book has been a life saver. This book has taught me not only how to do pivot tables with excel hands on examples (that you download at Mr. Excel website) but has also taught me how to think critically, why is this important to do, or why does this need to go here and not there. This hands on and theory approach is the best way of learning new concepts. I truly believe that a 10 year old could learn how to do pivot tables with this book it is that well written. The examples are great with data cleaning all the way to VBA programing. This book I would recommend without doubt if you are in need or want to learn pivot tables. I feel confident that in less than 2 days that I will put it on a resume as a technical skill. Best $30 I have ever spent and I would consider this a great investment for your life!

This book was required for a class. Initially the book itself is off-putting. Alot of the websites that the books refer you to to complete lessons have not been re-registered by the domain that had them when this book was originally published. Rendering some of the lesson exercises useless. Ignoring the fact that the passage of time, and the advancements in technology causes some of the lessons to feel abit dated the book itself is simply "alright" if you ignore the earlier mentioned points.Like, who still uses a PDA? *ahem* It gets what you need to know across and I guess that's the point.

Whoa....I resumed this book today and literally finished it today. So fast paced, so much action!I truly enjoyed this novel considering I did not expect this book to do well.American Street is about Fabiola Toussaint who immigrates to America with her mother from Haiti, but upon arrival, her mother is detained at customs, leaving Fabiola to navigate a new country and culture on her own with some help from her cousins and aunt.The theme of this story is based on Fabiola trying to make sense of what happened to her mom and then trying to find a way for her mother to join her. As she begins to settle into her new environment, she meets and falls in love with a young guy named Kasim Anderson. Anderson will teach her about her new world and also serve to temporarily fill the void that Fabiola only desires for her mother.So many events occur that keep the storyline interesting and moving, but I must say, it is also sad. Honestly, I experienced many emotions while reading this book, and when I finished it, I still had all the characters I met in my mind. I finished this book in two sittings, though I did take a break because of work.I gave this book 4 stars on GoodReads, but it is technically 4.5 out of 5.0. Zoboi did a great job writing this book. Our main character, Fabiola Toussaint, is well developed and the theme is real and will resonate with many readers who have foreign blood in them. I enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it.

I teach high school- both I and the many students I have lent this book to have loved it. The story is piercing, exciting and page turning. More than other young adult novels I have read recently this book had a strong literary lyricism driven by a magical realism that blended Haitian voodoo mythology with the characters and action of the story. It was refreshing to read a YA book that had artistic depth. I'm back to order a third copy so I can keep loaning it out more widely.

Verdict: a must-add for high school libraries and a heartbreaking account of immigration and the pursuit of the American dream from a rare cultural perspective. I will be shouting this book from the rooftops. Due to language and drug references, I concur with the grades 9-12 recommendation from Booklist and School Library Journal.Ibi Zoboi’s new novel, “American Street” is a gritty and haunting tale of a Haitian teenage immigrant, Fabiola Toussaint, who is separated from her mother when her mother is detained by immigration officials at the airport upon reaching America. Fabiola is then left alone to travel to meet her aunt and cousins in Detroit, where she is met with a harsh and unexpected view of the Unites States on the corner of American Street and Joy Road. In the family’s house on Detroit’s west side, Fabiola struggles to maintain her connection to the Haitian vodou of her heritage while striving to fit in and make a life of her own. Fabiola’s relationships with her cousins, new friends and love interest are strikingly poignant and raw, leaving her vulnerable to heartbreak and pain while she attempts to reunite with her mother.I read this book at full speed, not wanting to miss a single word while simultaneously racing to discover the conclusion to the story. I highlighted about 50 different selections that I wanted to return to and ponder, and was struck at how timely this novel is at this time of political strife regarding immigration and racial tensions. Zoboi herself is a Haitian immigrant, although she came to America when she was four years old rather than a teen as Fabiola did. Wow. Based on everything I'd heard (and essays I've read by this author), I knew I was going to love this book but was not fully prepared for its intensity and richness. As a faith a folklore nerd, I was hooked right away by Fabiola's fascination with the lwas of Haitian Vodou--that layer was gorgeous, deep, poetic, and masterfully handled. And then there are the rich and vibrant characters, the sweetness of first love, the heart-racing intensity of plot twists I will not reveal (and that you will not see coming!). It's a story of a girl, a city, immigrant joy and immigrant woes, heartbreak, love, and the dance among cultures in America's streets.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a really great book. I've read it many times and was surprised to find this illustrated copy free for download on to my Kindle. I started reading it immediately. None of the film adaptations have done justice to this book though the Disney version came close. Those terrible Johnny Depp movies are really an insult as they turn this wonderfully weird book of nonsense and fantasy into some kind of action movie. It is actually a very unconventional book and any attempt to impose a conventional plot on it will just lead to a terrible mess. This and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There are both masterpieces of fantasy literature. Also included are Tinniel's wonderful drawings.

It was fun going back to the original fantastic story with the white rabbit, mad hatter, and red queen. The book was shorter than I had expected. Perhaps I'd somehow equated the countless idioms this work has entered into our culture with length. It was silly, and fun, and a great way to lose yourself for a couple of hours. Perhaps we're not so innocent anymore that a story like this could be written and accepted. I'm very glad we were so innocent once.

Until reading this, I hadn't realized how much opposition Alice truly had in Wonderland. There's a lot to relate to for anyone who has spend any amount of time in civilization. She meets these challenges head-on, an inspirational heroine for those of us facing the obstacles of day-by-day living.

Alice in Wonderland makes no sense. It is as jumbled, disheveled, and incongruent as a dream, for that is what it is. Lewis Carroll wrote this story to appeal to the imaginations of children, an audience that does not need to search for symbolism to enjoy a story. Between the ridiculous plays on well-known poems of the day, the constantly shifting physics and attitudes of the world of Wonderland, and the hint at the end of a happy future when childhood finally passes by, he produced a tale that can appeal to imaginations of all ages.Alice in Wonderland is not a drug trip, an overblown political satire, or a bitter remark upon society. While some of the author's views come through in the text, and the reader is welcome to interpret as he or she sees fit, there is nothing wrong with reading the story simply as a fantastic journey into a childlike, imaginative mind living through a dreamscape of wild possibilities and cultural ignorance. A story written to appeal to a child with a child's grasp of politics and high society need not be criticised; it need only be enjoyed.

Classic. Read it with kids while on vacation. Kept the interest so high, that they wanted to dress up as characters from the book for Halloween. It is a must read for kids. My kids were really surprised Disney version is not the same as the book. Now they want to re-read all the classic tales. That’s always a plus.

The version I received had no illustrations at all (despite many of the reviews here commenting on the illustrations in their copies), and was in tiny print. This version is not suitable for a child, but maybe for a college student doing a thesis on the book.

I enjoyed this story and its been many years since I last read it. Its rather short & the included artwork brought even more life to the book. I enjoyed the ridiculousness and the riddles the characters exposed. Its all a really bizarre dream of Alice's but what an original dream it is! Everyone needs a "-wonderland" every now and then!

I didn't realize upon purchasing this book that it was an "adapted" version, meaning it's made easy to read, and is for children primarily. I wanted the full novel by Lewis Carroll, not some shortened, easy version. Maybe it says this in the description. Maybe I should've read deeper? Oh well! Gave it to GoodWill

This new edition is the same as the previous edition, down the the index and page limit. Everything is exactly the same, with some different fact pattersn for examples. Don't buy this book, buy the previous edition used, no changes.

This book was recommended to me by a Board-certified attorney who has been in practice for 30+ years, after I stumbled around trying to introduce exhibits in a hearing. It is a wonderful how-to of just about everything associated with prosecuting or defending a case, with one exception: How to introduce an exhibit that has no sponsoring witness?? That one is not in here.

Except condition, better than expected. Very happy with my purchase! I was reluctant because the book was used, the quality was just like it said- excellent!

This is a great resource for any attorney who does not have all the required evidence predicates memorized - that is to say, any attorney.

I have had Mauet's 2004 trial techniques and finally upgraded to this one. Much remained the same, but much updated. It is a great tool not only for beginner's, but for those who do not get into the courtroom regularly it is a good refresher.

Like his pretrial techniques book, Mauet provides some good pointers . I used this for a class, and it really helped me figure out how to conduct voir dire, examinations/cross-exams of witnesses, get evidence admitted, and do openings and closings.

Got this book for my trial ad class and it was very helpful! they give sections where you can see sample formats for questions, opening's closings, everything.

I'm doing a pro se complaint in US District Court. The book is simply excellent !!
