About the Author
C. Leo Hitchcock (1902–1986), a pioneer collector of Northwest plants, was professor of botany at the University of Washington. Arthur Cronquist (1919–1992), known as one of the most influential botanists of the twentieth century for his advancement of taxonomy, plant systematics, and floristics, spent most of his career at the New York Botanical Garden. David Giblin is collections manager, Ben Legler is informatics specialist and research botanist, and Peter F. Zika is a research botanist, all at the University of Washington Herbarium. Richard Olmstead is curator at the Herbarium and professor of biology. During her career as a botanical illustrator, Jeanne R. Janish (1902–1998) produced thousands of illustrations for over thirty books and other publications. The other illustrators are John H. Rumely, Crystal Shin, and Natsuko Porcino.

This Flora must have set a standard for Western Floras that was not surpassed until the Jepson Flora's for California were published, and has not been equaled elsewhere despite the fact that it's forty years old now. To put it simply the detailed and really beautiful drawings are an incredible aid as are the detailed plant descriptions.The taxonomy, of course, is outdated and it won't contain many of the non-natives that have surely entered the area or expanded their ranges since the book was published.Like all professional floras this flora is not for a laymen who's not willing to take the time to learn considerable terminology. If you are though this would be the book - in combination with more recent general floras with color pictures to - do it.Why a flora of this magnificent region has not been updated and where the Hitchcocks and Cronquists of today are is a unsettling question as particularly global warming brings changes that will surely dramatically affect species distributions over time. I see updated floras for California (Jepson), Montana (Lesica) and Colorado (Weber and Whitman) but for Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and New Mexico you're going to rely on works that are decades old (even 100 years old - New Mexico, or nothing - Nevada).
Thanks to all the people who worked and contributed to this very fine flora. I have been waiting a long time for it. My old blue copy is beat up and full of hand written notes. This new 2nd edition is much appreciated and a real tribute to Leo Hitchcock. Arthur Cronquist, and, of course, the amazing Jeanne R. Janish. I will actually be reading it page by page over the winter months. The book is awesome and inspiring. Good job!!!!!
It is impossible to truly evaluate while we are still knee deep in snow, but it has the attributes of the original, plus the updates that come with more knowledge (as DNA research has affected nomenclature).
You better be a serious botanist before acquiring this book. You clearly need to be familiar with the copious abbreviations used. But the book appears to be very complete after getting over that hurdle.
Love this old gem of a book. I believe it is the only text book I kept from college and its a great resource if you are interested in botany.
Until this manual is updated, it is the most authoritative and complete book for the identification of the flora or the northwest. The keys are excellent and if you do not mind learning nomenclature that is decades behind, the determination of which plant it is will be effected. The binding is good and having used it many times on my tours the the west, the book has held up very well (much better than binding of current publications).

A very important tome for any student/botanist/plant enthusiast wanting to key an unidentified plant!
