After reading her first Victorian novel, Lost Letter, I was hoping lightening would strike twice. It did. This book is so well written that there wasn't a stammer or stumble in the entire story. I loved the plot and the characters. I also greatly appreciated the lack of explicit sex. How refreshing to find passion between the H and h without having to skip through, what is to me, inappropriate sex scenes. Thank you, Ms. Matthews, for another great read.
I'm really sorry that I don't like this little romance more than I do. Matthews' first one, THE LOST LETTERS, was a little gem and I was looking forward very much to this one, which has as its hero the older brother of the H of the first book.The writing is good. I was especially impressed that the author is one of a select few who know the difference between "comprise" and "compose". That was almost enough for me to want to hand out 4 stars to this book. But, unfortunately, as I was reading this story with good writing and above-average grammar, I kept wondering when something unusual or unpredictable would happen.What do we have here? (1) A handsome young viscount whose rakish lifestyle and bad behavior he chooses to blame on unjust treatment of his younger self by his father and somewhat by his brother. (2) An orphaned vicar's daughter now alone in the world who must put up with unkind treatment by the woman of the peerage she is companion to and by that woman's horrid daughter. (3) Uncertain parentage of heroine to be unraveled as the book progresses, and, of course, the usual snobbishness of the Upper Ten Thousand. (4) Redemption of an immature hero.This has all been done before and held no surprises for me. That wasn't compensated for by the love story because I felt that the fall into love was a bit forced and too instant. The H and h didn't interact and converse enough to fully convince me that this was True Love. But I do believe that Ms Matthews has true talent and can do better. I'll keep on buying her books. The next one, which we have a sneak peek of at the end of this one, sounds interesting.
After luckily finding Ms Matthews' first historical romance, "The Lost Letter," I looked forward to seeing how she would follow it up. This second novel is very, very well written and a joy to read. So now I have a new author to follow. Both books are a delight to read. They stay appropriately within the time period, they have believable depth of character, the plots and pace are well crafted and engage the reader consistently, main and secondary characters are wonderfully drawn. So much is done so well. Keep them coming!!!!
Valentine March has been hired as a companion to a lady of doubtful reputation who takes her to a house party known for 'parlor games'. Viscount St. Ashton is attending; he has a bad reputation as a rake though lately he's tired of that life. When the two are caught in a compromising situation, they suddenly have to deal with big changes in their lives.I have now read all of Ms. Matthew's books out so far and enjoyed them greatly. This one is a bit rote in that the plot has been used many times before. Her writing is lovely though and it's a short novella so I didn't mind the same old story. I wish she had expanded more on St Ashton, or Tristan, and his renovations at his run-down estate; I think there would be great fodder there to add to the story. The same with Valentines's life in London. I expected her to get out some and have some fireworks with some of the people who'd been at the house party. I also didn't understand the Earl; he vacillated back and forth over his son's relationship with Valentine, and I couldn't see why he wouldn't be happy about it.Still, it's another enjoyable read from this author, and now I have to wait for the next book.
I have to say - I discovered Mimi Matthews just recently and read all her books except this because I was a bit tired of the whole "rake" story lines. But then I went ahead and bought it and read in an evening and loved it! I loved how maturely the heroine acted - even though she was so vulnerable in her position and place, she didnt hesitate to make herself even more vulnerable by being honest with her emotions.This is a lovely story with lovely people and I loved how the ending was so realistic and there was no magical solution to the heroine's position which I truly loved
I loved the story of Tristan and Valentine. It was so sweet and so beautifully written. The reformed rake who needs someone to believe in him meets his match in a sweet young woman of faith. It kept me turning the pages! A satisfying feel-good read.
Beautiful story of love between two unlikely people and how Valentine's faith in Tristan, turned his life around. I could not put the book down and look forward to reading more from this author. The book was also very well written; the editing was excellent!
4 1/2 stars. This is the first book written by Mimi Matthews that I've read but I plan to read more. I really enjoyed the story and the characters! The romance was very sweet. There was a lot of affection and passion but without too many embarrassing details.***Possible spoiler***I was very happy to see the hero take action to help his young lady. He didn't just quietly leave her, and he spoke up about his love for her.
