I was very excited to read this book because I have followed the author online and really like the subject. Unfortunately, much of the book is just a rehash of her articles and postings. She uses the same examples again and again and although she references statistics showings tens of thousands of successful businesses meeting her criteria, she only provides anecdotal evidence and minimal examples to "prove" her claims. My disappointment comes not from finding the information faulty or unhelpful, but that I wanted a much deeper discussion. This subject is at the leading edge of a massive shift in the workforce and yet the author couldn't come up with more than 200 pages. So it's less of an "indispensable guide to earning a six-figure take-home income on your own terms" and more of an overview of a handful of people who are early adopters of a new way of working. If you have not read the author's work online then I 100% recommend reading this. If you are familiar with her work then you can still read the book, but you should temper your expectations a little.
As a seasoned entrepreneur myself (I fall into the last category of annual revenues Elaine mentions), I found this book to be very inspiring! Elaine's years of expertise in interviewing really shine through. I can relate to a few of the people featured. My favorites are: the Nutritionista, property investor, ebook seller, and the author of The Morning Miracle. The first one--owner of the planner business just blew me away!I kept reading certain sections out loud to my husband. I could not put this book down! Along with the entrepreneurs she interviewed, Elaine also gives some great, true advice. She even reminds you to maintain your health while running your business. When I got to this section, I said "Off to the gym!" I took the book with me, read it while I was on the elliptical and again while walking on the treadmill. It's THAT good! This book is a great read for the aspiring entrepreneur, or those who are already in business and just need that extra push to create the kind of business and lifestyle they truly want. At the end, Elaine even has worksheets and references to encourage you to start your own business. As someone who is like a sponge that soaks up knowledge, I feel so inspired and confident that I'm on the way to propelling my own business to a million dollars!
Full disclosure: I'm a case study in this book. Here's the thing - I've been in a lot of books. And yet this is the only book you'll see me reviewing. Why's that? Because most books on "entrepreneurship" focus on the stories. But the reality is that everyone's story is different. The environment and challenges faced by every single entrepreneur are wholly unique to them, and replicating that is near impossible.Elaine's spent years profile entrepreneurs over at Forbes, CNBC, Fortune, Money, and more.So you combine Elaine's years of experience alongside her journalism background, and you get a book that actually breaks down the strategic and tactical choices each entrepreneur made. It's not a collection of aspirational stories (ugh) or faux-origin stories to inspire you (ugh x 2).No - instead what you get is actionable insight that helps you apply other people's experiences to your own business (and even your own life if you have no desire in entrepreneurship). This book is a no-brainer. If you wish to learn from other people's mistakes AND failures, you need to get it.
I actually pre-ordered this book but only recently had a chance to read through it.As someone that's read a lot of business books, I can say with confidence that this one is different. Why?Well, most business books are the rags to riches story of a single individual. And while you can get some insights from these types of books, it's only one perspective. What makes Elaine's books different is that she's curated several stories from different entrepreneurs from different countries, in different industries, and from completely different backgrounds. So if you can't relate to the guy that sells weekly planners, maybe you can put yourself in the shoes of someone that started a successful nutrition blog. Or maybe you identify most with the couple that sells organic honey.Plus, while the stories are interesting, the book also has its fair share of actionable tactics (By the end, I had a few pages of notes of things to try).In short, if you want to be inspired and learn actionable tactics that you can use to grow your business, I recommend checking this one out.
Elaine Pofeldt’s book provides clear, complete, and concise information on how to achieve financial success as a solopreneur. Similar books tend to focus on freelance businesses that provide time and location freedom, but not financial freedom. Conversely, this author discusses six types of solo businesses that have the potential to hit a million dollars in revenue. What I liked about the author’s approach is that she backed up her claims with stories of one-person businesses that had hit the million-dollar mark. Her advice isn’t just theoretical, it’s practical. For instance, she explains how successful solopreneurs use automation, outsourcing, elimination, and other processes to do more with less.In addition to all the helpful suggestions on what businesses to start, success factors for those businesses, and how to keep improving results, the author also provides valuable resources at the end of the book. For example, she recommends specific tools for accounting, communication, fulfillment, market research, etc. to save solopreneurs from having to do all the legwork themselves.I thought the book was very well written, and I highly recommend it to solopreneurs or anyone hoping to become a solopreneur in the near future.
