Having grown up very close to the Charlotte to Rochester track, I remember the smoke rising above the houses across the street from my bedroom window. With friends, we walked the tracks to the Lake (Ontario) and up the other side of the Genesee past the coal loader, which was active with a steam engine and the coal shaker that could be heard for miles. The book is full of interesting pictures and information, especially for those who might remember some of it. A friend and I went into Rochester and rode one of the last "subway" trolleys just days before ending passenger operations. For anyone interested in a piece of area history this is a concise, interesting and inexpensive way to do it. "Rails in Rochester" is just one of an excellent series of historical books provided by the publishers covering towns and industries over a wide area of the country, with many here in New England.

I especially like the photos taken near my current employer, The Gleason Works. Some of the old tracks are still in the floor of the old foundry area.

So, I usually don't write reviews of anything, but I wanted to write something this time mainly because of what this book has already done for me (and I just got it this afternoon). For most of my life, I've been an anxious person- I take on way too much responsibility even when the responsibility isn't mine to take and I put a lot of pressure on myself to be "perfect". Recently though, I've started working on it with a therapist because my phobias started getting a little out of control and she recommended that I try out this book. Because I'm sure so many other women out there have more responsibilities than I do (I'm 23 and I live with my parents though I work full time), I was a little hesitant to try it, but I'm so glad I did. Honestly, there's not much that keeps me calm anymore, but from the second I opened this book, I felt a little less of the pressure that's become normal for me. Even though I usually don't do this sort of thing, especially with something so deeply personal, I wanted to say a huge thank you to this author (if she ever sees it). I'm an aspiring novelist and I know how much it means to me when someone says my writing has touched them. So thank you so much for putting this book together- I already know that it's going to help me beat my anxiety!

Sometimes so honest I know I am not ready for it and I hope next year when I re-read it I will be ready to that honest and forward.Very, very good book. I am learning to talk from my heart space.

I bought this book for myself when I was feeling frazzled by all the demands of everyday life. Although I worried I was just giving myself yet another task to squeeze into the day, I have really enjoyed this book!!! Each page is a different day of the year with a different thought. The day's page only takes a minute to read, and it is always uplifting and encouraging. It really helps put everything back into perspective and shift your focus back to you.I've purchased this for several friends, and they have likewise enjoyed it. Highly recommend for any busy women looking to regain a little perspective.

Love this book I actually bought as a gift for a friend. I will admit I read through it before wrapping it up. She appeared to enjoy the book as much as I did. We are friends who worked out and ate breakfast together each morning. We used it daily to start our day off right and have a topic for discussion during our meal. I received a different edition from the picture but was still pleased.

SPOILERS BELOW----------I liked this entire book, literally until the last 50 pages this book was fantastic, 5 stars infact, the last 50 pages of this book we're so bad that I felt it was warrented to drop 3 stars.The ending was god awful, I cannot believe the author in the last 20 pages, after 1500+ pages of Cal and Mare romance to end with Mare giving Cal the cold shoulder after literal torture by Maven and 100 other things and him giving up the crown at the end all to literally end up being cock blocked by Mare in the last 20 pages.The ending of this book is one of the worst endings I've ever read, I have never came across a series that has put 1500 pages of effort into a romance and stiffs the main characters at the end, EVEN THE SIDE CHARACTER THAT WE DONT CARE ABOUT ENDED UP WITH HER LOVER! While the author stiffed the main characters!There is no sin in my book worse than ruining a massive spanning romance by giving the guy the cold shoulder at the end of a series, I would of preferred Cal to get killed off than read the last 20-50 pages over again, especially the very end.It's almost like the author wanted to leave room for additonal books, but then utterly ruined the entire romance with the "Give me distance" vibe at the end.I will not be buying anymore books from this author, this ending was that upsetting to go through everything these characters did and then for the author to ruin it all in the last 20-50 pages.I would not buy this book if your a fan of romances ending well or even badly, this author attempted to stay "neutral" on a romance she tried building for 1500+ pages and it leaves you as the reader, extremely angry and unsatisifed.

I LOVED the first 2 novels. The third was good also, but this one was just-predictable. There’s this tug of war between Mare & Cal & I feel like the epilogue just didn’t satisfy my hunger. It feels incomplete & I’m left feeling blah at the end. I’m disappointed for that to be the ending to a series that began so great.

Awful. Just awful.1. There were hundreds of pages of filler that I found myself skimming over. I was glued to every word of the previous books, but almost gave up reading this one. Still, I continued, because I love the characters developed in the previous books and I had to know how it ended!2. This book also had very little character development. Nothing was added from the previous books. In fact, it almost seemed like someone else wrote it at times.3. The whole book seemed avoidable with a 2 minute conversation between Mare and Cal.4. The ending was even worse! After fighting for everything Mare and Cal had, this is how it ended?! It felt like the author gave up. Completely. It didn't fit with the story, or with any actions the characters would have ever taken. Ever. It didn't make sense. I've wasted hours and hours of my life, for this!5. I was promoting this series to friends and family to read. However, after this, I will tell them not to bother. And, I won't bother reading anything else from this author.Grave disappointment!

The final installment of this series left me with a bitter taste in my mouth....no, not because, as other commentators have pointed out, Mare and Cal don’t get a fairytale ending, but for other reasons:Mare and Cal have both undermined one another over and over. They understand and love one another, but have different ambitions, opinions, and goals. Their ending was, I feel, believable and as sweet and hopeful as could be expected.!!!Spoilers for the first books and vaguely-phrased spoilers for this one ahead!!!No, my gripe is with “the other Calore” No, no, no, not because I was team Maven: that ship sailed burning over the horizon long ago – no way on earth that was going to end happily. But, Maven’s mind was torn apart by his mother: so much of what he did was literally out of his control. It was a fascinating premise, and I really did look forward to how it was handled. How was it handled, you ask? Poorly. It was an opportunity to explore mental illness and culpability; dogmatism and forgiveness. I’ve struggled with whether or not these themes were addressed, and I just didn’t like the message the author decided on....but no, I think not. It was just used as an opportunity to .....show Mare in a certain light. For a more in-depth (and spoiler-filled!) commentary on that, see the comment attached to this review.Adding to this, other characters who have committed atrocities for ambition, out of ignorance, or just for funsies are given free passes, because they were revealed to have some “redemptive quality” – usually romantic in nature. Ah yes, character X killed hundreds of Reds, contributed to political instability, etc....but it turns out character X has a lower-class lover! Cool, send them to the land of milk-and-honey!As for pacing, the book dragsssss. It’s told over multiple viewpoints, which should give us nuanced insights into each faction’s motivations....except that those motivations were often so bland and and cringe-worthy, I found myself skimming them by the end.Four books, two novellas....aaaaand more on the way! Because that ending *facepalm*. I have never seen a more blatant cash-grab. The epilogue should have just read, "ending coming soon.....for just three more installments of $4 in novella form!" I admire Aveyard's writing, I really do. But how this series was dragged out was unnecessary, and contributed to more money out of my pocket for less quality. I'm not putting any more money into this series, and I'm extremely hesitant to invest in any more from this author, if this is her standard.Ultimately, three stars for an interesting premise, nuanced romance between characters whose backgrounds put them at odds, and decent world-building. Minus two stars for trying to force me to care about characters that I don't care about, dragging the story though too many books, and turning a nuanced villain into ....whatever that was about.

I am so sad about this ending. I thought the ending of Divergent was horrible, but at least there was an ending. I am so angry right now.

Last book with an ending like that?!!? I'm usually one to re-read books that I love over and over.. Won't be doing that here, not with how I feel finishing it the first time around

Inman is a Confederate soldier and he is not very happy about it. After a hospital stay for a wound, he decides to leave the military life and return home. Maybe he will reunite with Ada; he hopes so. He is, however, aware that his decision will be opposed by a few groups. The establishment military will try to capture him. Inman feared more the bands of common criminals operating under flags of pseudo-patriotism, like the Home Guard, that would like to capture him. Some would turn him over to the Confederate Army; some would turn him over to the federal Army. Some would kill him for fun.Inman sets off on a long foot journey; a horse would both require care and attract attention. The journey could take months. Each chapter is a story of a character that Inman meets along the way. Some characters reappear in later chapters, but each chapter could have been written as a short story.One entertaining part of the reading experience with this book was that I had to use a dictionary, frequently. This well researched book uses vocabulary of the time to describe things that are no longer in common use. I did not know what “mast” was (p 83). The phrase “where the horse was taken from between the thills and put in a stall” (p.201) stopped me. What are thills? Even the Kindle supplied dictionary was sometimes not helpful; either there was no definition or the definition given made no sense in context. Further research gave me the answer and I liked the challenge.There is an interesting style of writing with complex sentences that provoke several thoughts from just one sentence.“The man had a big round head which sat unbalanced on him like God was being witty about making the insides of it so small. Though he was nearly thirty according to Stobrod, people still called him a boy because his thoughts would not wrap around the least puzzle. To him, the world had no order of succession, no causation, no precedent. Everything he saw was new-minted, and thus every day was a parade of wonders” (p. 262).Inman’s need to walk and hide at the same time takes him through forests, along ridges, over and through streams and rivers. He walks through seasons and observes changes. For the nature loving reader, this book is a delight with is detailed, informed description of terrain. Not only is central character Inman alone, the object of his journey and desire, Ada, is also initially alone. She remains in one place, becoming a self-taught gardener by necessity caused by war, until joined by Ruby. Ruby’s existence prior to meeting Ada was a lonely one. Here we also find great passages describing living in the woods, alone, from about the age of three. Although she and Ada live together, Ruby has no words to spare for Ada unless they have profit and meaning. The lone, self-reliant existence is reinforced. Characters living alone give rise to internal dialogue and philosophical interpretation. Ada did this from an educated background; Inman was more self-taught. Ruby was common sense survival driven. Resultant commonalities and differences were shown, not explained. Great writing.There is much more to write about how great this book is, but other reviewers have done a great job. I just wanted to add my observations. Are there any negatives? Only if the reader does not like very detailed descriptions of nature; even then the writing is great, it just doesn’t move forward as fast. I believe this to be a must read book for anyone who loves and works with literature.

Cold Mountain is my favorite book of all time! I've read it at least 7 times, and just wanted to have the audio version. I didn't describe the mood, above, because there isn't just one mood throughout the book. It takes you on a journey that you'll want to go on forever. The author has done his homework on colloquialisms, traditions, and history, and I ended up filling the margins and blank pages in the back with notes - I had to look up so many of the words and phrases! Each time I read it, I learn a little more, and see things from a slightly different perspective. I feel almost the same way about his second novel, THIRTEEN MOONS, which I've read 4 times so far. I'm sure many Charles Frazier fans are breathlessly awaiting his 4th novel (not so crazy about his 3rd novel, which is totally different).

Although there is plenty of action in this novel, the pace is slower than most "action novels" because of the author's vivid descriptions of environment, people, weather, etc. The chapters alternate between one main character and another main character, which just serves to keep one reading longer than usual, to get to what's happening "meanwhile." Believable characters and some plot twists. There is some violence, as it is set in a violent time -- the American Civil War. This is the first of Frazier's books I have read, and I will be looking at more.

I read this book very recently, when it was a Kindle daily deal. I am so glad that I did; it is like nothing I have read before. The author's descriptions of certain scenes were amazing, and he puts words together in ways I never would have thought of. I won't describe the plot, because I'm sure that has already been done. I will say that if you want a book with incredibly complex and developed characters, with a story and prose you can savor, you can't go wrong with this one.

As a Senior high school student, we read this for a summer assignment. I, being not a fan of old English words in literature, find it difficult to read it incessantly, because I have to look up unfamiliar words in the dictionary.All in all, this book is figuratively a roller coaster of emotions. One time you will feel joy, and then the next you will feel sad. I would not spoil the other emotions, as you would have to read it for yourself.

I loved it. I saw the movie first, many years after its initial release and was really taken in. When I found the opportunity to purchase the book and begin reading, my expectations were low, as I felt I already knew what was to come. I was happy to find the movie changed many things and added some as well and the book is by far better as a story goes. The movie helps to really visualize a era. I have recently finished the book and am now starting over at a slower pace, as I raced through it the first time. I also intend to track down some of the food stuffs the book describes and try my hand at Civil War era cooking techniques. The thought of wilderness travel as it was done back then as opposed to the well marked roads and autos we have in our day.

Perceptive and original thinking.

Great!

I was really looking forward to this book after reading Ngai's previous book, Ugly Feelings. On the whole, I found this an interesting book but not as fresh and acute as the previous one.The first chapter of this book is a real tour de force, it's simply brilliant. However, I wasn't so convinced by the following three chapters on the cute, the interesting and the zany which Ngai argues are "our aesthetic categories." The attempt to link these categories to a kind of diagnosis of contemporary capitalism is the weakest and least convincing part of the book. It sort of works for the zany but the other two are much less convincing. In Ugly Feelings there was also a somewhat forced attempt to use the case studies to make some larger political point but this was largely confined to the introduction. This diagnostic approach to culture really isn't Ngai's strong suit, her close readings of a range of cultural objects and a very impressive range of cultural theory is where she excels.

Together with Ugly Feelings (2005), this book demonstrates that Sianne Ngai is the most relevant, best read/viewed critic working in contemporary aesthetics. A feminist and Western Marxist, Ngai focuses on the downsides of the post-theological culture celebrated in Manhattan and the Left Bank in the 1960s and 1970s, primarily that it gave rise to contemporary consumerism, which weakens first-world people's aesthetic experience by promoting tepid forms of ambivalence and disavowal of social hierarchies. Zaniness blurs the line between work and play and invites contempt tinged by anxious pity rather than empathy with scatter-brained contingent workers; cuteness is weak care and magnanimity; interest is weak wonder alternating with near-boredom, like spending too much time on Facebook's news feed rather than reading a book, watching a film, listening to an album, having a conversation, or working on a project. After reading this book, I do not envy experimental artists working today if these aesthetic states are what they have to work with.Everyone writing about and teaching avant-garde art should read Our Aesthetic Categories, especially since it relates trends in the arts to pop culture and thus implies helpful ways to teach experimental art by bridging it with the pop culture undergrads are more familiar with. YES, the prose is dense, but so is everyday aesthetic experience in our media-saturated culture, we realize if we slow down enough to think about it. This book plus Liah Greenfeld's Mind, Modernity, Madness: The Impact of Culture on Human Experience (2013), Brad S. Gregory's The Unintended Reformation: How a Religious Revolution Secularized Society (2012), Charles Taylor's A Secular Age (2007), and Nicholas Frankel's annotated, uncensored edition of Oscar Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray (2011) shows Harvard University Press emerging as one of the top publishers of ambitious historical scholarship about modernity.

Not a quick read, Ngai's thoughts are dense and historically framed. Very enjoyable.

Ngai reinterprets the present through the lens of the zany, the cute, and the interesting. I feel like I've seen anew the TV, jokes, art, books, clothes, technology, etc. that I've been living with. Read this book.
